Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- The weather took center stage on the Fourth of July as wild storms forced the town of Surfside Beach to cancel most of its long-awaited Independence Day celebrations. Lightning struck the bell tower of Surfside Presbyterian Church, causing a fire there. Lightning also sparked four structure fires in North Myrtle Beach. (WBTW) NMB Fire Rescue was busy for most of the day with flooding issues, stranded motorists and fires. Flash flooding caused Buoys on the Boulevard to temporarily close its doors on one of the busiest days of the year because of standing water inside. Photos from around the Grand Strand show flooding, lightning bolts and a waterspout. (WMBF)
- Despite the bad weather on Monday, Salute from the Shore went ahead as planned and the Surfside Beach golf cart parade finished right before the storms hit. By day's end, the weather cleared and fireworks shows occurred on schedule all along the Grand Strand. (WMBF) (WBTW)
- On Tuesday, the big news was boating problems. SCDNR is investigating two boating incidents that happened late Monday night after Cherry Grove's fireworks. A boat lost power just offshore and capsized. Everyone on the boat was able to make it to the beach safely. Another boat hit the South Jetty in Little River, and there were some minor injuries. (WMBF) One person was hurt and taken to the hospital after a jet ski crash near Waites Island mid-morning on Tuesday. (WMBF) A boat crash near Yauhanna Bridge in Georgetown County on the Great Pee Dee River was responded to by emergency crews, but there is little information. (wpde.com)
- Horry County Council Chair candidate Mark Lazarus, who lost to Johnny Gardner by a narrow margin last week, is appealing the runoff election results, citing the absentee ballot error that was reported a few days before the election. Republican absentee voters were mistakenly mailed Democrat ballots. Lazarus says the error may have changed the outcome of the election and he wants Horry County Voter Registration and Elections Board to delay certifying the results of the chairperson's race. (WMBF)
- Authorities in Surfside Beach are calling for help from the public in identifying a man whose image was caught on a city surveillance camera on Ocean Boulevard South. Police say the man is suspected of entering a home in the 600 block of that neighborhood on Sunday, July 3 where he used a firearm to hold a 26-year-old woman hostage and sexually assault her. Surfside Police say this type of crime is rare in the town and they are taking the case very seriously. The man is believed to be armed and dangerous and residents are reminded to keep their doors locked and contact police with any information. (WMBF)

- Hundreds took to the MarshWalk on the Fourth of July to watch the 39th annual Murrells Inlet boat parade. The event was made possible by the Belin United Methodist Church and Boy Scout Troop 396. It took the two groups about six months to prepare for the parade. The boats were decked out in patriotic decorations of red, white and blue. It's always a great time on the MarshWalk! (WMBF) (WBTW)
- After the parade and fireworks celebrations, several Murrells Inlet neighbors cleaned up the post-Independence Day trash near the MarshWalk and other areas in the well-known fishing village. Community-based organization, Murrells Inlet 2020, was inspired by all the volunteers who came out to help protect the inlet after the celebrations. (wpde.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
