Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. Kids of all ages like big trucks and tractors, and North Myrtle Beach was happy to accommodate with its 4th annual Touch-A-Truck event Saturday. Trucks, ambulances, and tractor equipment from the NMB Public Safety and the fire department were on display in a safe environment where kids can get hands-on experience with the vehicles. The event gives kids the chance to learn which vehicles are used for different kinds of jobs. There was also a sensory hour for kids with autism where the vehicles were available without the use of horns, sirens, or other noises. (wpde.com)
  2. There are so many events that had to take the last two years off, and it was great to hear about the return of the annual Palmetto Police Motorcycle Skill Challenge that happened over the weekend at Myrtle Beach Mall. Officers from all around the southeast, and even some from Virginia and other northeast areas competed in the event. The competition is basically an obstacle course that focuses on speed and precision — like an agility competition on motorcycles. Proceeds from the event benefit Camp Happy Days, a Charleston-based organization that helps kids who have cancer. (WMBF)
  3. Hundreds of spectators turned up to watch the first-ever Myrtle Beach AM skateboarding competition at Matt Hughes Skate Park over the weekend. Friday was a free-skate day for anyone, and the competition happened Saturday. The event raised funds for the park so that some repairs can be made to the half-pipe, as well as adding a bowl, and making the park larger. Skaters from across the U.S. participated, and local vendors were present as well. (WBTW)
  4. Horry County Fire Rescue assisted Carolina Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in rescuing a baby swan, otherwise known as a cygnet, after the baby bird fell into a storm drain in the Forestbrook area. The drain opening was too small to use the long-handled net the wildlife rehab workers usually use, so rescuers reached out to local firefighters. HCFR was able to get the swan out of the storm drain, and reunited the bird with its family. (wpde.com)
  5. Improvements to the aging Myrtle Beach boardwalk are underway. Currently, the original Southern yellow pine decking is being replaced with wood-look, multi-colored decking material. The colorful material adds a visual pop to the boardwalk's surface, and replaced the original wood that was almost 12 years old. The entire project is scheduled to be finished by the end of the summer. The boardwalk is open while repairs are happening. (WBTW)

That's it for Monday, folks! See you Tuesday morning for another edition of the Myrtle Beach Daily.

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
