Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Ahead of tonight's Horry County Council meeting, some concerns have been raised about proposed business license regulations that would prohibit sex offenders from working at child-oriented companies. Council passed one of three votes needed to approve the ordinance last month. Tonight would be the second vote on the ordinance. Local police and the treasurer's office have raised concerns about the proposed ordinance. Some said the policy is too broad. Treasurer Angie Jones said the ordinance raises multiple questions for business owners and the county's ability to manage the new processes. We will provide updates as soon as they become available. 2. As of the time of this posting, an ongoing investigation is being conducted by Conway Police and Horry County Police, as they searched for armed and dangerous suspects. Shots were fired into a vehicle near Wetlands Industrial Drive early Monday morning. Officers began searching the area that is near Conway Christian School and Conway High School. No one was hurt in the incident, but Conway Christian School was closed for the day. The school will reopen on today. (WMBF)
  3. A person wanted for attempted murder in Myrtle Beach was arrested in Middletown, Connecticut during a traffic stop that was associated with an ongoing drug investigation. 30-year-old Steven Caldwell was found to be in possession of crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle at the time of the stop. An arrest warrant from Myrtle Beach for attempted murder was discovered, and he also faces several drug-related charges in Connecticut. Caldwell is being held on a $1.25 million bond. (WMBF)
  4. Tidal Creek Brewhouse has consistently raised funds for Ukraine since the war there began, and they announced on Monday that they raised just under $7,500 for the entire month of March. The funds will be sent to two organizations: Humanitarian Aid to Ukraine, and Global Empowerment Mission. (wpde.com)

From my notebook:

  • Tidelands Health is hosting several upcoming blood drives along the south portion of the Grand Strand, along with The Blood Connection. The blood drives will be in Murrells Inlet, Georgetown, and Pawleys Island. Scheduling an appointment is encouraged for all donors. (wpde.com)
  • A GPS bracelet from nonprofit Project Lifesaver helped a Grand Strand mother find her lost autistic child. The boy was in someone else's care when he went missing, but the police found him quickly thanks to the transmitter bracelet that he wears on his ankle. The bracelet emits an individualized frequency signal, making it fast and easy to locate anyone wearing the bracelet. The child's mom said the GPS device gives her peace of mind. (WMBF)
  • Myrtle Beach leaders would like the unused railroad tracks that run parallel to U.S. 501 to be turned into a trail. But others want a tourist train. The train line was abandoned almost four decades ago, but recently there has been renewed interest in putting the tracks to future use. Horry County owns the tracks, and it will be the entity that makes the decision about how the tracks will be used: trail with a park, or a touristy train ride. It will be interesting to see what transpires. (Myhorrynews)
  • A reminder that road work began on Monday in Myrtle Beach and NMB. The city of Myrtle Beach is repaving more than a dozen roads, as reported on April 1st. (Myrtle Beach Patch) The city of North Myrtle Beach is resurfacing North Ocean Boulevard in that city, as reported on April 3rd. (Myrtle Beach Patch)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
