Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. Officers with Horry County PD's Environmental Services were able to rescue a dog left outdoors in the freezing rain on Saturday night. The dog is at HC Animal Care Center and charges were filed against the dog's owner. HC Animal Care reminds the community that asking for help if you are unable to care for your pets is not shameful, and is better than facing legal repercussions. There is an ordinance in Horry County requiring pets be given shelter from the elements. (wpde.com)
  2. Late Friday night, ice buildup from the storm caused a powerline fire and a small explosion in Murrells Inlet. The freezing rain caused tree limbs to fall on a powerline near Inlet Square Mall, then the powerlines caught fire and there was an explosion. A brief power outage occurred, but there is no data on how long it lasted, or what neighborhoods were impacted. (WCBD News 2)
  3. Meanwhile, in the North Strand, over 1,500 were without power in parts of North Myrtle Beach and Little River Friday night into Saturday. Power was restored quickly, even during the storm. Myrtle Beach International Airport itself was impacted by a power failure, and was running on generator power late Friday night, with flight cancellations into Saturday reported. (WMBF)
  4. The rain and sleet is over, but cold air will stick around for the rest of the weekend, and crop up during the overnight hours most nights next week. Sunday will kick off with temps in the 20s along the Grand Strand, but will warm up into the 40s thanks to some abundant sunshine on tap. (WPDE)
  5. Winter weather is such a rare occurrence in the Myrtle Beach and Pee Dee areas, lots of people take photos to document the event. Here are two photo galleries of this weekend's ice storm! (WBTW) (WPDE)

  • Did you know that Tuesday, January 25th is National Plan For Vacation Day? Well, it's true! The travel industry picked this day to motivate people to plan a summer trip while being (most likely) stuck inside during the wintertime. The folks at Visit Myrtle Beach are participating. Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
