Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. An $890 million budget without a tax increase was approved by Horry County School Board unanimously at its Monday night meeting. The budget includes a $2,000 salary increase for teachers, and an 8% salary increase for bus drivers. About $330,000 will be put towards increased security, with an outside entity providing an additional $150,000 towards reviewing security procedures throughout the district. A 2% longevity increase for all regular school district employees is also part of the budget. There will be a lot of job openings as well. (WMBF)
  2. There is additional information on a large number of animals that were brought to Horry County Animal Care for emergency medical treatment after a police seizure. The animal control facility had to shut down for almost a day to provide medical care to several dogs found chained at a residence on Moore Road in Longs last week. That same day, more dogs and some chickens were found on McNeil Chapel Road in Longs. No arrests have been made yet. (Myhorrynews) HC Animal Care Center is offering free adoptions this week to help clear out the overcrowded no-kill facility. (WBTW)
  3. According to South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the Little River American Legion had two illegal gambling machines at its site that were discovered in 2021. The tabletop machines were found after SLED received a complaint about illegal gambling, and the case was settled about a year ago. The Legion post denied that any violations took place, paid a fine, and no one was arrested. At one point, its liquor license and beer and wine license were about to be revoked, but that matter was quickly cleared up. News13 obtained investigation documents recently, after requesting them several months ago. (WBTW)
  4. Testimony has begun in the trial of Irene Clodfelter, of Murrells Inlet. The woman is accused of hiding her murdered husband's body under his mobile home at Myrtle Beach Travel Park some time in 2017 or 2018. The body was discovered in 2019. Irene Clodfelter is charged as an accessory in connection with 85-year-old Hubert Clodfelter's death, but authorities have not charged anyone with murder in the case. Hubert Clodfelter's daughters found the body. One of his daughters was the first witness to testify at the trial. (WBTW)
  5. Horry County leaders will be voting on funding to change a well-known Garden City/Murrells Inlet intersection that many find confusing. The intersection is at Business 17 and Tadlock Drive, near Inlet Square Mall and SBB. It will cost an estimated $6.3 million to transform. If funding is approved, renovations will begin in approximately the summer of 2024. (WMBF)

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
