Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- Horry County Council passed the permanent road maintenance fee ordinance at this week's council meeting. A fee of $6.50, called a regional transportation fee, will now be part of the $50 road maintenance fee imposed when registering a vehicle. The money will be used towards paving and maintaining county roads. The council postponed voting on the highly-contested West Perry Road housing development proposal. (WBTW) (MyHorryNews)
- Ocean Boulevard in Surfside Beach has a reduced posted speed limit of 10 miles per hour, after authorities installed new signage along the E District of town. The reduction from 25 mph to 10 mph comes at the direction of Town Council, in the hopes that slower speeds will make the area safer for pedestrians. The E District is a two-block area along a stretch of Ocean Boulevard near the intersection of Surfside Drive. (wpde.com)
- Down the road, heading south, four Garden City businesses were honored for standing the test of time. The Horry County Historic Preservation Commission recognized Garden City Furniture, Village Surf Shoppe, Dunes Realty, and Garden City Pavilion Arcade for their decades of contributing to the beachside community's culture. (wpde.com)
- A young Grand Strand mother's social media post about the baby formula shortage went viral with more than 175,000 shares on Facebook. Sara Owens has been traveling far and wide to find formula for her baby since January. In Florence recently, she discovered a dad whose child can only tolerate one type and brand of formula, and he traveled a long distance to the one store that said they had it in stock — only by the time he arrived, that brand was sold out. Taking to Facebook, Owens posted about the struggle, the cost, and purchase limits on the prized commodity, hoping the news media would draw attention to parents' plight like they did with the TP shortage in 2020. Owens is working on coordinating drop-off spots for anyone who has extra canisters of formula to contribute to others. (WMBF)
- One Ohio man's dying wish came true right here in Myrtle Beach when he married the love of his life on the sandy beach. The pair are uniquely matched: they were born on the same day, at the same hospital, and their social security numbers are one digit different from each other. The couple has three children together, and all three participated in the ceremony. Hunter Knisley has had Becker muscular dystrophy his whole life, and was recently diagnosed with heart failure. Hunter's dream was to see his bride, Emily, walk down the aisle. (wpde.com)

That's it for Cinco de Mayo Thursday, folks. I'll see you Friday for another edition of the Myrtle Beach Daily!

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
