Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- Horry County Fire Rescue broke its own record for the largest graduating class, ever. Recruit Class 44 had its graduation ceremony on Friday night, with 58 fire-rescue graduates — a record not only for Horry County, but also South Carolina! The next graduating class will have an additional 50 firefighters, so between the two classes there will be plenty of personnel to serve the ever-growing community. (WBTW)
- A motel about to be demolished was put to one last use when Myrtle Beach firefighters used the space for some hands-on training. Two firefighting teams worked maneuvers on separate sides of the building. One team practiced hose maneuvers with new recruits, and the second team practiced roof cutting procedures. This type of training is much more valuable than classroom learning for firefighters and recruits, said Cpt. John Evans. (wpde.com)
- With the approval of $375,000 secured from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Horry County can now clean up debris along the Waccamaw River. Horry County matched the amount. The project will consist of removing fallen trees, storm debris, and other obstacles in the water to clear the way for boaters to navigate the river more safely. (WMBF)
- Visitors and residents of North Myrtle Beach will have some new options for beach chair and umbrella rentals this summer. The city updated its rental policy for its beach services division. There will be two seasonal rental packages available from Memorial Day through Labor Day. One package for full-time NMB residents who live within city limits, and the second package for everyone. Residents must show proof of residency by way of a South Carolina driver's license. The seasonal package cost for residents is $900, and the other package is $1,800. Restrictions apply. Full-time residents can purchase a rental package starting April 11 in person only, at the Beach Services office on 6th Avenue South. (WMBF)
- Home prices in Carolina Forest continue to rise steadily according to new data released by Coldwell Banker last week. The median price for single-family, three-bedroom homes went up 35% in 12 months. Some are saying the neighborhood is getting close to unaffordable at this rate, and with mortgage interest rates climbing as well. First-time buyers are definitely experiencing challenges. (WBTW)

- New13's Pet of the Weekend is Simba, a 5-year-old mixed-breed dog that was surrendered to Grand Strand Humane Society by his owner in February. Simba loves people, is easy to walk, but needs to meet any other dogs living in a potential adoptive household to be sure they get along. Simba is available for adoption along with lots of other dogs and cats at the shelter's temporary location near Tanger Outlets off Highway 501 in Conway. (WBTW)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
