Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. Horry County PD reports that they brought one person into custody in connection with a shooting in Socastee following a brief standoff. The incident occurred off Highway 544 on Lake Park Drive. One person was shot and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. There is no word on their condition at this time. Later on, near Highway 111 in Little River officers participated in a brief period of negotiation with a suspect who was taken into custody, apparently in connection with the Socastee shooting. (WMBF)
  2. More information is coming out in the Brittanee Drexel case. The Georgetown County Sheriff says Raymond Moody confessed to the murder and told authorities where they could find Drexel's remains. (WBTW) Another man, Timothy Taylor, who was thought to be connected to the case is no longer a suspect. (wpde.com) The parents of Brittanee Drexel are turning their attention to justice for their daughter now that the search for her killer is over. (wpde.com)
  3. The baby formula shortage is hitting home for one new mom in Myrtle Beach. Heather Dye's baby daughter is lactose intolerant and is allergic to an ingredient found in most powdered formulas. There is only one brand she can ingest, and her mom searched for that brand all over the Grand Strand, went out of state, and looked on Amazon, with no luck. She wants parents to know that there are online groups and forums where people are willing to help, and she urges parents not to give up. (WBTW)
  4. The children of fallen North Myrtle Beach sergeant Gordon Best honored him in Washington, DC last weekend at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. North Myrtle Beach Police posted photos of the kids paying their respects to their dad at the monument on the police department's Facebook page. Best was the first officer to lose his life in the line of duty in the NMB Police force's history. (WMBF)
  5. Beach rules are in effect all over the Grand Strand, and you may be interested in knowing where to find the latest information such as aquatic risk conditions and what those flags mean, what is and is not allowed and the UV index. Head over to SafeBeachDay.com for the latest info. In North Myrtle Beach, only umbrellas are allowed on beaches for shade from now until September 15. For Myrtle Beach, the same rule goes into effect on Memorial Day. Tents, cabanas, sport-brellas, canopies and so forth are not permitted. (SafeBeachDay.com) (nmb.us) (cityofmyrtlebeach.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
