Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Starting today, Horry County Schools is participating in the DHEC Test-to-Stay Program which allows students exposed to COVID-19 to attend in-person learning without quarantine if they test negative for COVID, have no symptoms and meet certain other criteria. At-home test kits will be distributed to parents by the school system. Parents may report results from tests they have obtained themselves outside of the school system as well. Results will be reported by parents using SCDHEC's attestation form on its website. HCS will no longer perform testing inside school buildings. (wpde.com)
- The airlines are coming up with creative ways to deal with the nationwide pilot shortage. One way is to give new pilots signing bonuses. Myrtle Beach Academy of Aviation CEO Jeremy Bass says many of his graduating pilots are seeing sign-on bonuses of between $20,000 - $50,000. With those financial perks could come higher ticket prices for travelers, though. One airline is waiving the requirement for new pilots to have a college degree — most flight certifications can be obtained in about one to two years. (WBTW)
- The City of North Myrtle Beach may start using license plate readers to monitor paid parking lots starting in March. The technology will eliminate the need for parking decals. The amended parking ordinance was approved on Monday by city officials. (WPDE)
- North Myrtle Beach Department of Public Safety swore in its first Junior K9 officer. The Junior K9 Program is a way to encourage kindergarten through 5th grade children to exhibit positive behaviors in the classroom. Rylee Delconte, a second-grader at Holy Trinity Catholic School, is the first NMB student to be inducted as an officer in the program. Rylee's name will be pinned on a vest worn by Jolene, one of the department's K9 officers. (WMBF)
- North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue and The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach teamed up to give a terminally-ill rescue dog a chance to be hero for a day. Teddy, a blond, fluffy, medium-sized mixed breed, who is not available for adoption because of his cancer, spent a day with NMBFR's B-Battalion crews last weekend as an honorary firefighter and police officer, and he had a blast! About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
