Here are the top stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Horry County Schools is paying bonuses to employees to express its gratitude to them for their service during the pandemic. Bonuses will be received by Thanksgiving. Full-time employees will get $750 each, and part-timers will get $375. The money comes from district funds. (Myhorrynews)
  2. The Horry County Board of Education District 3 seat that became vacant upon the death of Ray Winters from COVID-19 in August has been filled by his widow, Tracy Winters. The Board interviewed three potential candidates, and voted twice. The first vote came in as a tie. Tracy Winters is looking forward to continuing her late husband's work in local education. (WMBF)
  3. Deputy Joe Muszynski, nicknamed "Ski," is in a rehab facility after spending 71 days in Grand Strand Hospital with COVID-19. Ski spent 32 days in intensive care on oxygen, and lost over 50 pounds while hospitalized. During rehab, he will build up his breathing strength and physical strength as well. We wish Ski a speedy recovery! (wpde.com)
  4. Socastee buyout appraisals are underway, mainly in the Rosewood neighborhoods. $13 million has been allotted to the flood buyout program, but there are concerns that market values of the properties involved are not equitable to the buyout amounts. Appraisers will be using 2016 and 2018 home values (due to hurricanes Matthew and Florence). It was suggested that the amounts offered in buyout will be around 30% too low, based on today's housing market. Fair market value was not utilized in making the buyout calculations. (wpde.com)
  5. North Myrtle Beach City Council met this week and approved flood ordinances and the annual Christmas Parade. The annual parade in North Myrtle Beach will happen on December 4th, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Two flood ordinances were approved; one regarding new flood damage control standards, and the other concerning revised flood insurance rate maps. Those maps go into effect on December 16th. (WBTW)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
