Here are the top four stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- Horry County students and teachers returned to the classroom on Monday, amid the highest number of reported COVID-19 cases seen in the state so far. SCDHEC published updated guidelines to match the new CDC guidance announced a few days ago. Mainly, quarantine times are reduced to 5 days instead of 10 for students and employees who test positive for the virus. Horry County Schools is updating its COVID dashboard in real time. Georgetown County has not posted updated numbers on its dashboard since December 17th. However, GCSD returns to the classroom on January 4th, so that may be the reason. (WPDE)
- Residents of beautiful Cherry Grove had some flooded streets and yards to contend with after Sunday's and Monday's storms swept through the area. Even though the whole Grand Strand is still considered to be in a moderate to severe drought, that didn't stop some roadway flooding in the low-lying community of Cherry Grove. Up to 2.5 inches of rain fell in some areas, and the King Tides are in effect, causing some decent flooding conditions. NMB updated city flood maps in November to be in compliance with the National Flood Insurance Program. (wpde.com)
- The driver of a car that crashed into a Myrtle Beach medical building in 2020, and the owners of that building, are being sued in a wrongful death lawsuit. The family of an 86-year-old woman who was killed in the crash filed suit on December 21st. The building owners are accused of failing to maintain a safe environment for patients in the building. The driver was not charged at the time of the crash. The civil suit accuses her of driving too fast and failing to either maintain or use the car's brakes. (WBTW)
- The education group SC for Ed is working to raise awareness of teacher salaries and working conditions. Salaries of South Carolina teachers are approximately 11% below the national average. Other issues at hand are a lack of clearly defined duties and hours, as well as contractual issues such as the ability to opt out of a contract for reasonable reasons. The group has seen an increase in teachers leaving the profession, and others omitting teaching as a career choice. SC for Ed is hoping state lawmakers will address these issues in 2022. (WBTW)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
