Rise and shine, Myrtle Beach! Let's get you started this Sunday with everything you need to know going on in town today. Here are the top stories: an animal lover appealed to Horry County for a new ordinance to help pets, a fully-vaccinated family wants a COVID booster shot after their vaccine efficacy seems to have waned, Horry County Schools and Conway Medical Center joined forces for a vaccine clinic for students and school employees, football spectators get the green light to attend games at full capacity, and one person died in a submerged vehicle in a pond near Grissom Parkway.

First, today's weather: Showers and scattered thunderstorms. High: 82 Low: 73.

Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. A Loris woman wants better animal protection measures in Horry County, and she proposed an ordinance to the county council to hopefully get it done. Lynn Greco is an animal lover and a member of Animal Voice Alliance of SC. She noticed a lot of animals, particularly in the countryside, did not have water, shaded areas, or food; and some were chained to pens or trees. Horry County Council is in the midst of reviewing the ordinance with the public safety committee. (WBTW)
  2. A fully-vaccinated family in Horry County wants a booster shot after they all caught coronavirus. Their situation lines up with study results that U.S. health officials released this week, indicating that the COVID-19 vaccine's efficacy could wear off approximately six months after the second dose. Nora Battle, her husband, and her mother-in-law each caught the virus, despite being fully vaccinated. Battle also says her 6-year-old son was under quarantine with the family when school began, and never attended school in person, but his name appears on the school district's COVID-19 case dashboard. 3. Meanwhile, Horry County Schools and Conway Medical Center teamed up on Saturday at a vaccine clinic for students and school staffers at four different locations in the county. People who attended the clinics were given the Pfizer shot, and masks were required on-site. (WMBF)
  4. Football teams in Horry County will start the fall season with no stadium capacity restrictions. After a year when county athletics had a budget shortfall of $270K, the SC Department of Commerce has given the thumbs' up for games to be played with no restrictions. The district did subsidize losses for each school affected. (MyHorryNews.com)
  5. Myrtle Beach Police were called to Robert Grissom Parkway on Saturday morning after a vehicle was seen submerged in a pond. One person died inside the vehicle. The investigation is still underway, and police are asking the public to contact them with information. (MyrtleBeachPolice Facebook)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
