Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- Horry County police are investigating an apparent road-rage shooting on Highway 31 near the Robert Grissom Parkway exit. The incident occurred early Wednesday morning. The victim reported the incident to police and said he was driving on Highway 31 when apparently another driver did not like the way the victim was driving. Four shots were fired at the victim's vehicle causing minor damage. Officers found two bullet holes in the vehicle. There were no injuries. Police are asking for the public's help in tracking down the shooter who was driving a white four-door sedan. Call the department's tip line (843) 915-8477. (WMBF) (WBTW)
- North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue responded to its first call using the department's new amphibious boat on Tuesday night. C-Battalion crews responded along with North Myrtle Beach Police for reported boaters in distress in the vicinity of Waties Island. The boaters had launched at the 53rd Avenue North boat ramp in Cherry Grove and headed towards the ocean. At some point, the boat began taking on water. Occupants managed to swim to Waties Island during high tide. There were no injuries reported and the crew used the new UTV vehicle to successfully rescue the boaters. - At a former church daycare worker's bond hearing, she tearfully told the court "I am a respected member of my church. I love kids. I would not hurt children." Her husband, who also works at the church where Katherine Coleman was employed, spoke at court and asked that bond be granted. Coleman posted the $50,000 bail and was released from jail. She is accused of mistreating two toddlers. The families of those children also spoke at the hearing, referring to video evidence that showed Coleman grabbing and shoving the children. (WRAL News)
- Georgetown County's Animal Control ordinance on dog tethering and kenneling now has more stringent restrictions for dogs and other animals that may be restrained. Effective in September, animals under six months of age cannot be tethered. Animals over six months old must be within the eyesight of their caregiver and must be able to access adequate shelter, food and water. Tethers are required to be 12-feet long with a swivel at both ends. Chain tethers cannot exceed five percent of the animal's body weight. Animals cannot be left tethered and unattended for more than eight hours within a 24-hour period and cannot be left outdoors after sunset or during inclement weather. Specific materials must be used for collars and harnesses (nylon, polyester, cotton or leather). Shelters must have a roof and three sides and must have insulation and/or coverings for protection from the elements. (WMBF)
- Peak hurricane season is here and local leaders held an informational forum on the topic Thursday afternoon. ABC15 meteorologist, Ed Piotrowski, spoke at the event about emergency preparedness and the importance of always having a plan in place. He and the other speakers pointed out that there were no hurricanes that made landfall on the Grand Strand during the last couple of years, so people may be getting somewhat complacent. Add to that the influx of new residents who may have never experienced a hurricane before. The event focused on educating people about what to do before, during and after hurricanes. First and foremost, have a hurricane kit ready in case a storm does happen, and always know your evacuation route. (wpde.com)

- Day 4 of Travels With Emilia — she has arrived in California! Emilia went to her forever home on Thursday. She and her human companions drove through New Mexico and Arizona, and landed in California with enough time to stay overnight in Palm Springs. Emilia says everyone was crying happy tears. Can you believe no one showed any interest in her, whatsoever, here in the shelter on the Grand Strand for eight months? That's because her meant-to-be family is all the way in California. There will be further updates once Emilia is settled in at her new home. Emilia says if her story touched your heart in any way, please consider taking a chance on an unwanted dog or cat! - The well-known Angel Of Hope statue that was at Cherry Grove Point for many years has vanished and locals want answers. The statue served as a beacon of hope for many Cherry Grove residents, and miraculously survived countless storms including Matthew, Dorian and Isaias. The angel was placed in the dunes near the inlet by the late Rhonda Pettit who set it there as a place for people to mourn or pray. Pettit passed away about five years ago. Residents feel that the statue "watched over" everyone and they're hoping whomever took the statue will return it to the dunes. Beach Patrol was notified of the missing statue. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
