Holmestown Arrest + Vet's Dream Comes True + Golf Course Facelift

Here's the latest on what's happening in Myrtle Beach, delivered straight to your inbox.

(Patch Media)

Happy Monday, Myrtle Beach! Here's everything you need to know going on around the Grand Strand to kick off your week. Today, I'll tell you about an arrest near Holmestown Road, an MBPD recruitment event, an Air Force vet throws the first pitch, the oldest golf course in Myrtle Beach gets a makeover, and SC lawmakers ponder horse racing and gambling to boost the state's economy.

First, today's weather: Rain and humid throughout the day. High: 84 Low: 75.

Here are the top stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Officers responded to a housing development off Holmestown Road Sunday morning and arrested a wanted suspect. The arrest took place on Paddington Court and there is no additional threat to the community. Further details are not available at this time. (WMBF)
  2. A recruitment expo hosted by Myrtle Beach Police, gave potential recruits a firsthand look at what it takes to be an officer with the department. The event happened on Saturday, and gave interested applicants the opportunity to get their foot in the door with the MBPD. An agility test was offered on the spot, and a written test is required. MBPD will have more recruitment events monthly. (WBTW)
  3. An Air Force veteran had his dream come true when he threw out the first pitch at Saturday night's Myrtle Beach Pelicans Military Appreciation game. The game was a doubleheader against the Columbia Fireflies. Captain Ben Boyle threw the first pitch for game two. He wore his MB Pelicans hat throughout his tours of duty in the Middle East, and says he kept the hat with him to remind him of home. (WMBF)
  4. Myrtle Beach's first golf course, Pine Lakes Country Club, has reopened after a restoration project that took a couple months to complete. The course opened in 1927 and was designed by the first president of the PGA. The site is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The course's greens were restored, new grass was installed, and greenside bunkers were renovated as part of the project. (Charleston Post Courier)
  5. South Carolina legislators studying the economic impact of racing horses in the state, say the subject of legalized betting on horse racing should also be considered. The committee will take about eight months to study whether horse raising for racing can do anything to contribute to the state's economy. Changes to gambling laws would need a constitutional amendment to be passed by the House and Senate, and the voters. (WBTW)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
