Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- A fast-moving 20-acre wildfire off Highway 22 caused Horry County Fire Rescue to recommend that residents in the area evacuate their homes on Tuesday. The fire affected the area near McKinley Shortcut Road, between Conway and Longs, according to fire officials. The blaze began mid-morning, and is contained at the time of this posting. HCFR is in contact with the residents who had been asked to evacuate as a precautionary measure. There is no word yet on when evacuees may return to their homes. No structures were damaged, and there have been no injuries reported. Traffic on and around Highway 22 is not affected, although smoke will be visible for an extended time. (WMBF)
- North Myrtle Beach Police are investigating after a Pinehurst, North Carolina woman was found dead in the Intracoastal Waterway. The body of 68-year-old Kathy Holderfield was discovered floating in the ICW near Colonial Mall on Monday after her husband had reported her missing from their Barefoot-area condo earlier that day. An autopsy is scheduled for this week. (Myhorrynews)
- Another lucky Grand Strand lotto player! A Murrells Inlet player won $100,000 in Monday night's Powerball drawing. The winning ticket was purchased at Speedway located at 4326 Highway 17. The ticket holder had added PowerPlay to their ticket, multiplying the $50,000 prize by two. (WMBF)
- Town leaders in Surfside Beach want residents' feedback on what kind of businesses they'd like to see open up on the new pier, envisioned to be fully operational by March 2023. Families can give feedback by email at piercommittee@surfsidebeach.org. Businesses that want to set up shop at the pier need to submit an RFP by noon on Friday, April 8. One major concern is parking after the pier opens, since parking is already an issue in town. The pier has been closed, and under reconstruction, since it was destroyed in 2016 by Hurricane Matthew. (WMBF)
- Atlantic Beach town council has voted unanimously to ban open carry of weapons at town-sponsored events. The ordinance was approved Monday night at the council's meeting. The decision comes as the town is preparing for the return of Black Pearl Cultural Heritage and Bike Festival after a two-year absence due to COVID. The festival has been an annual event since 1980, and will take place this year May 27 through 30 (Memorial Day Weekend). (WBTW)
From our sponsor:
Where should you invest as a Myrtle Beach resident with a $149,000 nest egg? Thanks to a change in the legal code, there's a new investment Myrtle Beach residents need to know about. In fact, Bloomberg asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now and many of them chose it.
This may surprise you, but it's fine art.
Growing your nest egg with art isn't new. Wealthy families like the Rockefellers have done it for centuries.
Here's why:
- Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
- Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
- Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
Translation: Art could be one of the best investments for uncertain times.
Luckily for you, we found Masterworks. This revolutionary platform lets you invest in art by Warhol, Monet, Picasso without spending millions.
The best part? Anyone from your area can skip their waitlist*.

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
