🌱 Horry County Burn Ban Is Back + SCDHEC May Be Two Agencies

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Myrtle Beach.

(Patch Media)

Happy Friday, Myrtle Beach! Here's everything you need to know going on in town today, Friday, March 4, 2022.

Before I begin, I had announced earlier this week that Funplex will be opening for the season on March 11. Apparently, the address of the amusement park is not on Funplex's website, and since it's a new park, I wanted to be sure folks knew the location: 1405 North Ocean Boulevard, between 14th and 15th Avenues, in Myrtle Beach. Thank you Joanne B. for bringing this to my attention.

Taking a look at today's weather:

Cooler with increasing clouds. High: 60 Low: 53.

Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. The lifting of Horry County's outdoor burn ban was short-lived. An outdoor burn ban is back in place due to dry and windy weather conditions. The ban was put back in place due to extreme fire danger because of low humidity. It will be in effect until further notice. Permitted burns are also prohibited. (wpde.com)
  2. The Grand Strand continues to show support for Ukraine. Prayer for Peace vigils and fundraisers are happening all around the area. A Peace for Ukraine Vigil was held at Plyler Park on Wednesday night with the SkyWheel lit up blue and yellow again, and Ukrainian music playing. Donations are coming in for a shipment of medical supplies to Ukraine. Tidal Creek Brewhouse, whose co-founder's parents emigrated to the U.S. from Ukraine during World War II, is giving 50% of sales of a newly-renamed lager, Slava Ukraini, to a Ukraine Relief Fund. Several restaurants are accepting donations. (WMBF) (wpde.com)
  3. A group of residents from the Grande Dunes neighborhood have filed an appeal in court against the City of Myrtle Beach and the Myrtle Beach Community Appearance Board to block approved plans for more than 300 homes that would be added nearby. The "horizontal apartments" would be built north of 71st Avenue North, and would be called The Cottages. The development would be next door to another new development called The Willows, that is already under construction. The appeal states that the Cottages would be built in the Cane Patch Tract, that has restricted zoning requirements. The appeal also makes note of traffic concerns and other issues. A city spokesperson said the city does not comment on pending litigation. (WMBF)
  4. Horry County lawmakers have been busy filing bills for the upcoming legislative session. The bills cover a number of issues including: high school graduation requirements, experimental treatment modalities, an airboat ban on local rivers, removal of school board members for various specified reasons, banning political candidates if they have ethics violation debts, and livestreaming school board meetings. Some issues to keep an eye on in 2022! (WBTW)
  5. Another bill proposes breaking up South Carolina Department Of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) into two separate departments. The Senate Medical Affairs committee voted to send the bill to the chamber floor. If approved, there would be a new Department of Behavioral and Public Health; and a separate Department of Environmental Services. The former would bundle public health, mental health, and drug abuse services into one agency. (wpde.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
