Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Horry County officials have put another outdoor burn ban in place, effective immediately, due to dry weather conditions. The ban will remain in effect until further notice. We are in a situation with very low relative humidity, along with dry and windy conditions. (WBTW)
- A building materials company is partnering up with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources to build artificial reefs off the coast of Myrtle Beach. SRM Concrete has been giving excess concrete to the project that has been ongoing for several decades. The artificial reefs are made out of steel structures, concrete, and other items such as army tanks and subway cars. Marine life turn the structures into habitats where they can live and reproduce. The structures provide habitats for many fish species. (WRAL News)
- The biggest challenge to Myrtle Beach Police when it comes to solving missing persons' cases, is the belief that there should be a 24 to 48-hour waiting period before reporting someone as missing. Police say the first few hours are crucial, and filing a report early may be more helpful. They warn against putting personal info on social media. There are a lot of travelers, visitors, and transient people who go missing, and the department stays busy with missing persons' cases each year. (WMBF)
- With the growth of Horry County comes an influx of seniors and retirees to the area. According to SCDHEC, nearly 18% of suicides in South Carolina are among people 65 years of age or older. The isolation of COVID-19 has affected the age group particularly. The suicide rate increases as people get older, too. This may signal a need for more mental health resources in the Grand Strand area. There are resources available if you or someone you love are experiencing mental health issues call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at (800) 273-8255. Locally, reach out to United Way of Horry County, or Waccamaw Center for Mental Health. (WBTW)
- Grand Strand Humane Society's lease at Tanger Outlets on Highway 501 is expiring at the end of March. So, the shelter is again looking for a temporary home as it continues to raise money to build a new facility. The good news is 100 cats and kittens are being transferred to shelters in northern states this week, and 32 dogs were adopted during a special event last weekend! But there is still plenty of work to do, and many pets who need homes. GSHS needs to raise $6 million to build a new shelter. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
