Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. A second reading of a proposed 'No Fireworks Zone' ordinance in Horry County was approved by County Council on Tuesday night. If the proposal passes a third reading, it will mean setting off fireworks in certain areas of Horry County will be prohibited based on complaints or requests from residents. Hand-held sparklers and small ground fireworks are exempt from the proposed ordinance. If the issue passes, then those who set off fireworks in the no-fireworks zones will be subject to fines. (WMBF) (WPDE)
  2. Council also passed a first reading of an ordinance that would amend the county code for issuing business licenses. The amendment would have new eligibility requirements for people seeking business licensing for child-oriented businesses. Examples of such businesses include: ice cream trucks, daycare centers, and miniature golf venues. If the ordinance passes, business owners seeking licensing for a child-centric business will be vetted to find out if they had been involved in sex crimes, or are registered sex offenders, and if so they would be banned from getting the business license. The first reading passed unanimously. (wpde.com) Council also voted on, and approved, a resolution supporting the people of Ukraine, and condemning Russia's invasion of the nation. (wpde.com)
  3. North Myrtle Beach building permits for single-family homes have dropped 60% for 2022 as compared to last year. There was a spike in building permits last year, with many applications submitted for entire neighborhoods, which is unusual. This year's permit number is near-normal, with 139 permits pulled. Also, the median sale price for NMB increased more than $100K, and the number of homes available decreased by about 60% in 2021. City officials believe the numbers for permits will increase again as we get into spring and summer. (WBTW)
  4. Election season in Horry County has officially begun. Candidates wishing to run for public office have until noon on March 30 to submit their paperwork. Primaries are happening June 14, with runoffs, if any, to occur June 28. The general election is November 8. The 7th Congressional District race, and a U.S. Senate seat are both up for election. (Myhorrynews)
  5. A Myrtle Beach man who was seen on video striking a dog while he was walking the dog for the animal's owners, has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty. The 24-year-old man was "entrusted to take the dog for a walk" by the dog's owners. A video that circulated online shows the man striking the dog in the head. Horry County Animal Care Center led an investigation, and determined the dog was in good condition and had been well-cared for by its owners. The dog is back with the owners now. The man who was arrested is being held at Long Detention Center. (WMBF)

You're all caught up for St. Patty's Day everybody! I'll see you Friday for another round of the Myrtle Beach Daily.

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
