Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. Horry County has again lifted its outdoor burn ban for unincorporated areas effective Thursday. The ban was in place for two weeks because of dry and windy weather conditions. Anyone wishing to burn outdoors must continue to follow regulations, and needs to contact SC Forestry Commission before starting to burn. (WMBF)
  2. Gas prices are slowly creeping downward according to information released on Thursday by GasBuddy. The average price per gallon in the Myrtle Beach area went down to $3.92. Prices peaked about a week ago, on March 10, and are starting a slow but steady decline. Be glad you're not in California, where the average price per gallon topped out at $5.79 on Thursday! (WBTW)
  3. A judge granted bond on Thursday for Meagan Jackson, one of two suspects charged with killing Gregory Rice who went missing in October 2020, and whose body was found about a month later near the Little Pee Dee River. Rice is the father of four of Jackson's children. Jackson's attorneys had requested bond with home detention. Judge Edgar Dickson granted a $15,000 bond, placed Jackson on home detention, and ordered her not to have any negative contact with law enforcement. (WMBF)
  4. The Beach Advisory Committee for Myrtle Beach had a meeting this week, and several attendees expressed concern about a lack of police presence on the beach. The owner of Lack's Beach Service said they are concerned about their employees, some of whom have been physically assaulted on the beach. City manager Jonathon Fox Simons said that Myrtle Beach itself is not the only area experiencing the problem. Police departments all across the nation are short-staffed. (WBTW)
  5. The Myrtle Beach Police Department is having a recruitment expo on Saturday, March 19 to recruit new officers. The event is at the police annex on Mustang Avenue, Market Common from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (MBPD Facebook Page)

From my notebook:

  • Are you wondering what permanent daylight saving time might look like for Myrtle Beach and surrounding areas? Take a look at this article about the new bill, dubbed the Sunshine Protection Act. The law, if approved, would take effect in November of 2023. The nation would "fall back" on November 20, 2023, and then "spring forward" one last time in March of 2024. (WBTW)
  • Horry Georgetown Technical College has issued three press releases this week. The college named South Carolina Technical Education Association's Educator Of The Year award winners: Brandon Haselden, James "Ron" Watkins, and Kathy Moore. (Press Release Desk) The school also announced that the Alpha Nu Sigma Chapter received awards at the Carolinas Regional Convention in Winston-Salem recently. (Press Release Desk) Finally, the college is celebrating South Carolina Technical College Week March 21 through 25. (Press Release Desk)
  • Beware of the Portuguese man o'war! These sea creatures are no joke. You may start to see more and more of them as the summer weather begins to take hold. But some have been spotted already on the south Strand, even though it's a little early. The colorful siphonophore, a sea animal that is closely related to jellyfish, should be respected. Their tentacles can reach up to 20 feet, and the sting is extremely painful. Keeping your distance is the only advice that makes sense when encountering the Portuguese man o'war! (WPDE)
  • A number of candidates wishing to represent SC's 7th Congressional District spoke at the Carolina Forest Civic Association meeting this week. They mainly answered questions from residents about national issues. The two most well-known candidates, Tom Rice and Russell Fry, did not attend the meeting. Barbara Arthur, Garrett Barton, Mark McBride, Ken Richardson, and Jeanette Spurlock did, and put their best foot forward to show the Carolina Forest residents how they would work for them. (WBTW)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
