Here are the five top stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- At this week's school board meeting, Horry County Schools passed an agenda item to add more modular classrooms for the next academic year. The short-term solution will cost over $6 million, and the funds will add 36 modular classrooms to the 88 already in place. The school district also needs two new elementary schools in the Carolina Forest area due to overcrowding and population growth. (WBTW)
- Residents of North Myrtle Beach have the opportunity to weigh in on the city's 10-year Destination Master Plan. The management of Destination North Myrtle Beach says it needs residents' input and says it wants all voices to be heard because tourism can have positive and negative implications for residents. (wpde.com)
- Two Myrtle Beach men led Virginia state police on a high-speed chase, down a gravel road, into a chicken farm, and then took off on foot through the woods. A thermal imaging drone was used to help the police find the men, and then K9 units were brought in. The dogs followed the scent of the men, who were found and arrested without incident. The pair are being held without bond, and face a number of charges. The vehicle they were driving had been reported stolen from Norristown, Pennsylvania a few days earlier. (WBTW)
- The owner of Two Sons Seafood in Garden City says when they were forced to close at the beginning of the pandemic, some new business ideas came to light. Dylan Foster said the day they shut down in March of 2020 was the day he got creative and started thinking outside of the box. What could have been a negative experience became a blessing, as Foster and his team developed recipes, meal kits, and cooking classes based on the idea that anybody can prepare restaurant-quality meals at home. Even after the eatery opened up again, the new offerings continued, and became a huge part of Two Sons' full-time business. The current classes are sold out through May. (wpde.com)
- After 43 years of being a Myrtle Beach mainstay, Mr. Sub will be closing its doors Thursday. Owners Ken and Tommy Conley are retiring. They have owned the shop since 1979 when they relocated to Myrtle Beach from Pittsburgh. The sub shop on the corner of Kings Highway and Mr. Joe White Avenue was known as "The Best On The Beach". From our sponsor:
Where should you invest as a Myrtle Beach resident with a $149,000 nest egg? Thanks to a change in the legal code, there's a new investment Myrtle Beach residents need to know about. In fact, Bloomberg asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now and many of them chose it.
This may surprise you, but it's fine art.
Growing your nest egg with art isn't new. Wealthy families like the Rockefellers have done it for centuries.
Here's why:
- Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
- Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
- Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
Translation: Art could be one of the best investments for uncertain times.
Luckily for you, we found Masterworks. This revolutionary platform lets you invest in art by Warhol, Monet, Picasso without spending millions.
The best part? Anyone from your area can skip their waitlist*.

- If you've ever been sitting at the traffic lights in Little River on the corner of Highway 17 and Fairway Drive, you've probably seen the huge tortoises crawling about under the watchful eye of their caretaker, Randy Gallagher. The two Sulcata tortoises were rescued by Gallagher, 72, who cares for upwards of 50 or more tortoises. The full-time rescue effort is a lot of work, and there's no vacation. Donations are welcome, and much appreciated. (Myhorrynews)

- The 8th annual Oyster Roast and Bloody Mary Contest that happened Sunday at Wicked Tuna in Murrells Inlet raised money for the Grand Strand Humane Society. The funds will help GSHS find a new building, as they are still grappling with not having a permanent place to shelter the dogs and cats in need. Organizers of the event are grateful to the community for showing up to support the animals. (WBTW)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
