🌱 Horry County Voters Extend Penny Tax + MB Winter Wonderland Details

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Myrtle Beach.

(Patch Media)

Hi there, Myrtle Beach. It's Thursday, November 10, 2022. I'm here in your inbox this morning to tell you everything you need to know about what's going on around town, including news on...

  • Election results including the Penny Tax.
  • An update on tropical storm Nicole.
  • Winter Wonderland at the Beach is on with a few small changes.

Correction: In Wednesday's Myrtle Beach Daily it was erroneously stated that all Publix stores on the Grand Strand would be closed this coming Friday. That info came from an old article about Hurricane Ian that showed up as "related to" tropical storm Nicole. Publix stores are not going to be closed due to weather tomorrow. Apologies for the error. Many thanks to an eagle-eyed reader who caught my mistake!

Speaking of weather, here's how Thursday is shaping up:

Rain and wind. High: 73 Low: 70.

These are the great local businesses who sponsor the Myrtle Beach Daily. We love what they do, and we think you will, too:

  • Thinking of a move to the Myrtle Beach area, but don't know where to start? What if we could connect you with a real estate agent that not only has over 100 5-star reviews on Zillow — but has lived through a relocation herself and understands the process well. Val Lyons at Realty One Group knows that details matter. If you're downsizing, relocating, or curious about home taxes in a new area, Val knows the market and understands communication is key. Here are the top four stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. To use the words of one local reporter, "Horry or Georgetown counties electing a Democrat anytime in the future is highly unlikely, but the opposite seems to hold true in the Pee Dee." Want to know all the South Carolina and Horry County election results? These articles have all you need and more! (wpde.com) (WBTW) (WMBF)
  2. Horry County voters approved extending the 1% sales tax for Horry County Schools to make capital improvements. The Penny Sales Tax was passed in 2008 and was to have expired in March of 2024. The measure was up for renewal during the 2022 midterms and passed 68% to 32%. Horry County Schools will receive 80% of the money, CCU gets 13.3% and HGTC gets 6.7%. The tax will be in effect for 15 years. (WBTW)
  3. Tropical Storm Nicole is expected to make landfall in eastern Florida by the time you read this and could become a hurricane before she reaches Florida. A cold front is going to help weaken Nicole as the storm heads into the Carolinas Thursday and into Friday. Gusty winds will be present Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Heavy rain will move through the area Thursday and part of Friday. Minor coastal flooding in the Myrtle Beach area is expected during morning high tides on Thursday and Friday. The center of the storm will pass west of the Grand Strand, and there is a small possibility of isolated tornado activity. There will be rough surf and possible beach erosion as well. Temps will warm up into the 70s for a couple days! (Myhorrynews) (wpde.com) (WMBF)
  4. All this talk about tropical storms and last week's summertime temps makes it easy to forget that the holidays are right around the corner! Myrtle Beach hasn't forgotten. The city is getting ready for Winter Wonderland at the Beach, with a few changes. The light show is being moved from the Pavilion to the Boardwalk. A holiday market and a Southwest Winter Fun Zone are being added. Every Saturday night, Santa will make a special visit. Winter Wonderland starts November 17 and goes until December 23. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
