Here are the top stories today in and around Myrtle Beach:

  1. Based on 2020 Census data, Horry County will be gaining $2.1 million in state funding, more than any other county in the state. South Carolina's overall population grew nearly 11 percent from 2010 to 2020, and counties that grew faster than that rate will see more money from the Local Government Fund. The Horry County increase accounts for a full 1 percent of the county's total budget. (WBTW)
  2. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) sent a letter to North Myrtle Beach claiming its new "vulgar" music ordinance violates the First Amendment. The Oct. 7 letter urged Mayor Marilyn Hatley and City Council to repeal the ordinance, which restricts how loud vulgar music can be played within city limits. The letter cites various Supreme Court rulings regarding vulgar content and ultimately calls the ordinance an "unconstitutional content-based law" that "criminalizes vast swaths of protected speech." 3. Spirit Airlines has added a new nonstop flight to Myrtle Beach International Airport from Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. The daily nonstop service will begin in April 2022. According to director of airports Scott Van Moppes, demand for travel to and from the Grand Strand and markets throughout New England has continued to improve over the years, and this new nonstop route will help meet that growing demand. (Myrtle Beach Sun News)
  4. A new Horry County Schools program is helping address the ongoing labor shortage by better arming adults with the knowledge they need to succeed in the workforce. The county's Adult Education program aims to prepare students for the workforce and connect them with local employers. The free program is available to adults not currently in school with classes held in person or online Monday through Friday. (WBTW)
  5. Myrtle Beach residents who wish to support the Grand Strand Humane Society may now do so through their monthly utility bills. The "Remembering Animals in Need" (R.A.I.N.) program allows city utility customers to regularly support the humane society's efforts by choosing a one-time or monthly donation amount. The city then forwards all collections to the shelter to help feed and care for the animals staying there. (WMBF News)
