Here are the top stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- The Coastal Carolina Association of Realtors has reported a spike in rental costs as the Grand Strand housing market continues to go wild. According to their report, a whopping 99% of sellers sold their homes for their asking price, or higher this year. There is now a serious lack of inventory, which is causing people to consider renting instead. In turn, rental prices have skyrocketed. (WMBF)
- Rehabbing old hotels and motels could be one answer. An investment firm called NDH Capital is acquiring some old Grand Strand hotels and motels, and converting them into affordable housing, with furniture included. A total of 254 units in three former hotel/motel buildings will be transformed and rented out as affordable housing units. Qualified families will be able to apply for a housing lottery in January to receive a voucher. (WMBF)
- The United Way of Horry County released the results of a recent survey, and found that the majority of Horry County residents expressed concerns about safety and crimes in the area. 43% of survey respondents believe Horry County is an unsafe community; 63% were worried about gang activities, and 67% said they're concerned about a lack of police presence. (WBTW)
- United Way is looking for volunteers to train for IRS tax certification so it can staff its income tax assistance program. There are three locations where the free tax prep will be offered: Conway, Surfside Beach, and Myrtle Beach. There could be another site in North Myrtle if they can recruit and train enough volunteers. To qualify for the free tax preparation program residents need to meet certain eligibility requirements. - Myrtle Beach Hyundai is adding 30 new jobs and some cutting edge technology as it expands its space with a new dealership on Frontage Street, between Seaboard Street and Mr. Joe White Avenue. The new tech will include electric car charging stations (for the electric vehicles they'll have in stock), and advanced tire balancing/front-end alignment equipment. Supply chain issues delayed construction, but building is now underway. Senators Hembree and Rankin joined in the dealership's groundbreaking ceremony. (wpde.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
