Here are the top stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- ICYMI: North Myrtle Beach City Council approved $1.7 million in annual funding for I-73 late Monday night. The council voted unanimously to approve the resolution, under the condition that construction will begin no later than December 31, 2024. The resolution stipulates that the money will only be allotted to "the actual construction of I-73 within Horry County", and is contingent on other cities in Horry County contributing as well. If the section of highway here is ever completed (it's been in the works for decades), then Myrtle Beach would theoretically be connected with Michigan! Imagine that! (wpde.com)
- Police in Myrtle Beach have charged a 36-year-old woman with owning or harboring a vicious, dangerous or wild animal and nuisance animals in connection with the death of a Pomeranian that we reported about recently. Police have also issued a warrant for the arrest of a dog walker who was taking care of the dog in the woman's absence, but who lives in Minnesota and has since returned there. The Pomeranian was one of two dogs that died, in two separate and unrelated attacks by the same dog. The dog is being boarded by authorities until the court determines a course of action in the case. - An Atlantic Beach town council meeting to discuss the 2022 Bikefest and other topics was canceled due to low council turnout on Monday. The meeting was to have occurred at 5:00 p.m. Monday, but was canceled four minutes before the meeting's start time. The group was to discuss operational procedures for the May, 2022 Atlantic Beach Memorial Day Black Pearl Cultural Heritage and Bike Festival, otherwise known as Atlantic Beach Bikefest. The popular event was canceled the last two years due to the pandemic. If approved, it will take place May 27 through May 30, 2022. No word yet on when the next town council meeting will happen. - Festive Brass of Myrtle Beach is in Hawaii to perform at the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The group also laid wreaths at the USS Arizona Memorial. After they get back to South Carolina, the band will hold a special performance at Duplin Winery at 6:00 p.m. on December 22nd. They were the only band from South Carolina invited to Hawaii for the anniversary. (wpde.com) Related story: 19 South Carolinians who died in Pearl Harbor (WBTW)
- The repeatedly-delayed North Myrtle Beach plastic bag ban is now slated to go into effect in July, 2022 . City Council unanimously voted to reduce the delay to six months, after they had previously voted to delay for a year (until January, 2023). Single-use carryout bags will be forbidden at retail businesses once the rule goes into effect. The six month headway will give city leaders a chance to find out if negative effects from the pandemic, as far as shipping and manufacturing of substitute bags, will be alleviated in that timeframe. About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
