📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Myrtle Beach who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.
I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Myrtle Beach Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.
Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- Hurricane Ian landed south of the Myrtle Beach area, near Georgetown, Friday afternoon. Ian pounded the Grand Strand with the force of a hurricane, but not as powerfully as it did when it hit Florida. Wind speeds of 85 mph were felt in our area with storm surges and substantial flooding. (Myrtle Beach Patch) The storm was downgraded to a tropical storm around 5 p.m. Friday. (WMBF)
- Not surprisingly, Hurricane Ian caused power outages throughout the area. Horry Electric Cooperative, Santee Cooper and other providers have great outage pages on their websites that can be utilized to monitor outages and restorations. Some traffic lights were out in the downtown Myrtle Beach area. As of this posting, thousands were without power around the area. (wpde.com) (WMBF) AT&T has announced that it is waiving overage charges for Myrtle Beach and the surrounding area due to Ian. Data overage charges will be waived from September 29 through October 8. (WBTW)
- Airlines operating flights to and from Myrtle Beach International Airport canceled more than 100 flights on Friday. About 107 flights were canceled ahead of the storm. The airport says it stayed open on Friday. Passengers should check with individual airlines for flight updates. Flights are said to resume Saturday afternoon. (wpde.com) (WBTW)
- Publix closed Grand Strand area stores due to Hurricane Ian on Friday. Conway Medical Center was fully-staffed during the hurricane but with some services unavailable. The Pawleys Island Police Department has reported that part of the Pawleys Island pier collapsed and is floating southward. Part of the Cherry Grove Pier also collapsed into the ocean. The Apache Pier and the 2nd Avenue Pier both were damaged as well. Pawleys' Midway Fire Department used a high-water rescue vehicle to save people and pets at a residence on Myrtle Ave in the seaside village. Garden City residents report that flooding from Ian was "worse than Hurricane Matthew." (WBTW Photos)(wpde.com Photos)
- There is an update on the River Oaks Golf Club rezoning proposal. The developer's new plan has 558 units and an agreement that the developer would pay $540 per unit to widen River Oaks Drive. That widening project would also include installing left-turn lanes and deceleration lanes. The agreement also has a provision for the developer to improve recreational facilities currently owned by Horry County, on an adjacent parcel of land next to the golf course along the ICW. Neighbor concerns are still at the forefront of discussions and there will be more meetings before anything is approved. (wpde.com)

From my notebook:
- North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue: Units were dispatched Friday morning to investigate smoke in the building at Walmart, 550 N. Hwy 17. Units were able to identify and isolate the issue to an air handler on the roof but management made the decision to close for the day on Friday. The store will reopen with normal hours on Saturday. (North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue via Facebook)
- "Who would have imagined that thousands of acres of virgin forests would one day be replaced by sprawling subdivisions?" wrote My Horry News reporter Steve Robertson when he was working on this article about turpentine and timber once being the backbone of Horry County. In the 1800s, Horry County was a major producer of turpentine in the U.S. It all started with Maine entrepreneur Henry Buck who came to the area after rosin from pine trees in Maine ran dry. Another businessman, Daniel Jordan of North Carolina, purchased some land in Little River and started to harvest rosin to produce tar, pitch and turpentine. (Myhorrynews)
- Rainbows! Colorful ribbons across the sky could be seen after the hurricane hit mostly on the South Strand from Georgetown, to Pawleys Island, Surfside Beach and Garden City. (wpde.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
