Here are the top 5 stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. A body found in Murrells Inlet waters has been identified as missing kayaker, Vladimir Norman. The 29-year-old went fishing Saturday night and was reported missing on Sunday. Officials from several agencies searched for Norman on Sunday and Monday. A good Samaritan found the kayak on Sunday near Vandy's Point on the south end of Garden City where the Inlet comes into the Creekside area of town. Norman's body was found on Monday. An autopsy is being performed to confirm the cause and manner of death. (WPDE)
  2. To follow up on a story reported here in November, a Myrtle Beach man has been arrested and charged with grand larceny in the theft of more than $40,000 worth of pressure washer tools and a trailer. The thief was seen on surveillance video driving a white SUV, walking with a crutch, and wearing a boot cast. That descriptive information was crucial in police locating the man. It is not clear if the stolen items were recovered. (WBTW)
  3. RV rentals are popular this year on the Grand Strand for the holiday season. The owner of a new business called Cozy Turtle RV Rentals says lots of people will be camping at Huntington Beach and Myrtle Beach State Parks during the next two weeks. (WPDE)
  4. Tilly Swamp Road and Highway 90 was closed on Monday morning due to a fuel spill from a truck accident. A dump truck was struck by a trailer that had come loose from another vehicle, and 100 gallons of fuel spilled onto the road. The spill was mitigated and the road was closed in both directions for about 90 minutes. (WMBF)
  5. No surprise here: as we head into the Christmas holiday week, gas prices have gone up a teeny bit in South Carolina. Prices have been going down during the last six weeks. The increase was so minimal — at .9 cents per gallon — it's hardly noticeable. The average price of gasoline is under $3.00 per gallon on the Grand Strand. (WMBF)

Correction: In Monday's newsletter, I listed a Red Cross blood drive at Anchor Baptist Church in Little River, with a start time of 10:00 a.m. The actual start time was 1:00 p.m. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

From my notebook:

  • Horry County Government: All offices except Public Safety operations, will be closed December 23 and 24, and Monday December 27th in observance of the Christmas holiday. (Horrycounty.org)
  • Have a peek at the most recent Myrtle Beach area job postings to find out who's hiring on the Grand Strand. (Patch)
  • Jamie Seabolt, owner of MOPS Cut in Myrtle Beach, is paying it forward for the homeless this holiday season. Seabolt hosted a bowling fundraiser on Sunday to get money for care packages for Grand Strand's homeless community. The second fundraiser hosted by Seabolt is happening tonight at 6:30 at Grand 14 Cinema in Market Common. The cinema will show my favorite movie, 1946's It's A Wonderful Life, with Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed! (WBTW)
  • The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach: Being in the shelter is hard on our community's homeless pets! It's a stressful environment! We want to make our shelter pets feel as comfortable as possible while they are waiting on their forever families to find them here. One way we do that is to provide them with a comfortable bed. Please consider donating a Kuranda dog or cat bed to the shelter by clicking the link in the Facebook post. (Facebook)
  • Two lost pet posts from Nextdoor: One dog found, another lost. Please help locate the owner of the first dog (in the care of animal control now); and help search for the second dog if you can. Keep in mind that dogs often escape if they are staying somewhere unfamiliar or if they are left alone with someone coming in to check on them briefly (for example if their family is vacationing, and someone is dog sitting). Lots of dogs go missing at this time of year when their families are away. (Nextdoor) (Nextdoor)

You're all caught up for Tuesday, December 21, 2021. I'll see you Wednesday with another Grand Strand newsletter!

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
