A first look at Sunday's weather:

Strong winds subsiding. High: 59 Low: 44.

Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. Causeways in Pawleys Island were closed by the Pawleys Island Police Department on Saturday due to flooding from King Tides. Residents were advised to stay home and wait for the water to recede. Authorities urged residents not to approach or drive through flood puddles. The tides are expected to rise again on Sunday before returning to normal. (WBTW)
  2. Horry County Schools marching bands ended their year in a musical extravaganza this week. Nine bands from various schools performed songs at St. James High School including "Thriller" and "Hot, Hot, Hot." The bands showcased their talents after a grueling season of practicing in sweltering heat and hours of practice. Almost 600 students performed, and all participated in a grand finale for audience members. (WMBF) (MyHorryNews.com)
  3. One member of the marching band had a different experience this week. St. James High School student, Max Strader, was seriously injured on Halloween night in a motorcycle accident, resulting in the need for part of his leg to be amputated. The community pulled together this weekend to help raise money for Max and his family. The fundraiser was held at Outside Alive Farms, a place where Max spends a lot of time, and where he attended a Halloween party before the crash. (WPDE) (WMBF) (WBTW)
  4. A North Carolina man was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for a deadly DUI crash that happened in 2019. Claybon Lewis Atwater was convicted and sentenced this week at a trial in Horry County. Atwater was convicted of driving under the influence when he hit a motorcycle driven by David Schnell in April of 2019. Schnell was seriously injured, and his wife, Donna Schnell was killed in the crash. Circuit Court Judge Steven. H. John sentenced Atwater to 22 years in prison. (WMBF)
  5. Indigo Farms in Little River, just on the border of North and South Carolina, on Highway 57, has expressed concerns about plans to extend Highway 31. Currently, the road ends at Highway 9. The plan is to extend the parkway into Brunswick County, North Carolina, basically making it easier to get from the Grand Strand to the Wilmington area. The proposed Carolina Bays Parkway extension plan offers several different routes, almost all of which will cross into, and impact, Indigo Farms' land by putting asphalt and ramps on top of its farmlands. Monday is the last day for the public to submit comments regarding the project online at the NCDOT website, and the Bellamy family is asking the public to weigh in on choosing a route that will not impact the farm that has been in operation for six generations. About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
