Here are the top three stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Mark Lazarus has filed an appeal on the state level after Horry County's GOP denied the appeal of the runoff election results. Lazarus lost to Johnny Gardner for the chairperson position on Horry County Council. A hearing by the South Carolina GOP will happen in Columbia on July 14, according to state law. Lazarus wants a recount of all absentee ballots due to a mistake — almost 1,400 Democrat absentee ballots were sent to Republican voters. He claims that only 140 corrected absentee ballots were received by June 28 — the day of the runoff election. Lazarus' appeal filing deadline was July 4. HCGOP threw out the appeal because it was dated July 5. (WMBF)
  2. Crowded around here this week, isn't it? Well, not according to Myrtle Beach hotels and businesses who reported a decrease in visitors during July Fourth week. The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce says there was a five percent decrease between the week of June 26 versus July Fourth week. They blame the decrease on two things: bad weather and inflation. In 2021, people simply had more money for traveling. Prices at most hotels are higher now. The chamber says 2021 was a one-of-a-kind year and this year's numbers are higher than 2019 but lower than 2021. (wpde.com)
  3. More antisemitic flyers have been found on lawns in Carolina Forest, after two previous reports of similar flyers being distributed on properties in Surfside Beach and Conway back in June. The flyers are put in plastic bags to keep them dry with added candy, rice or beans to weigh them down. Jewish community leaders say people need to stay aware, but also be united in pushing back against hatred. (WBTW)

  • Did you know? The renovated Myrtle Beach Boardwalk is made from recycled milk jugs and soap containers. The material is called poly lumber, and it has a 40-year warranty against cracking, peeling, chipping or fading. Way to go Myrtle Beach! (wpde.com)
  • Even as one Carolina Forest restaurant announced it would be closing its doors forever, a few other new ones are popping up in the busy neighborhood. Labor shortages and supply chain issues are a problem, but business owners are determined to be successful. A new Italian restaurant will be opening in September, and a barbecue restaurant will be ready in October. (WBTW)
  • Myrtle Beach photographer Jack Thompson is in search of a permanent home for his collection of Myrtle Beach images. The 86-year-old has been photographing Myrtle Beach since he was 13 years old. A temporary space on Broadway Street helped him out for a little while, but now he needs to find another place before August 1. Meanwhile, a documentary featuring Thompson is scheduled to be shown at the Grand 14 Cinema in Market Common on July 17 at 5 p.m. (MyHorryNews.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
