Leave The Turtles Alone+Town Council Updates+High-Speed Chase
Find out everything new in town today with the Myrtle Beach Daily.

Happy Thursday, people of the Grand Strand! Let's get this day started. Here's everything going on in Myrtle Beach today. In today's news I'll tell you about a nesting turtle that was harassed, a settled dispute involving Market Common redevelopment, Surfside officials talk about their moldy building and the town's pier, there might be some hurricane preparation grants for area homeowners, and a high-speed chase with police ends with punctured tires and two in custody.
Before we get to that, let's check out today's weather: Humid and partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 86 Low: 74.
Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Horry County Police were called to Garden City Beach to respond to a group of people harassing, photographing, and riding a rare green sea turtle that was trying to nest. It was the first ever green sea turtle documented in South Carolina. Officials remind everyone that nesting turtles are a protected species, and off-limits. The suspects fled the scene. Police have classified this as animal cruelty and have a description of the suspects. (WPDE)
- The City of Myrtle Beach, Horry County, and school officials have settled a dispute concerning the redevelopment of the Market Common area of town. Development of the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, now known as Market Common, has been in contention since Horry County and its schools sued the city back in 2018. (MyHorryNews.com)
- The Surfside Beach Town Council met to discuss the mold issue in one of the town's buildings, as well as re-construction of Surfside Pier. The pier should be finished by the summer of 2022. A motion to purchase another building failed. The existing building will probably need to be temporarily closed, with temporary structures placed at town hall for workers to conduct business during mold remediation. (wpde.com)
- A hurricane home prep grant could be available for Myrtle Beach area homeowners. The grant, administered by the SC Department of Insurance, comes from the SC Safe Home Program. Grants are awarded based on certain criteria, and the application period for this summer has already passed. Homeowners are encouraged to sign up to be notified about upcoming grant opportunities. - Two men were arrested after late night high-speed chase near North Myrtle Beach over the weekend. The vehicle was initially stopped for a window tint violation. The driver took off after police approached the car, and then the speedy pursuit occurred. Police used spike strips in the road to puncture the vehicle's tires. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
