Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Liberty Steel will stay open. That's according to the Georgetown Zoning Appeals Board and city council after the two groups allowed an appeal deadline to lapse this past weekend. United Steelworkers Georgetown branch president says now the city and the mill need to find a way to work together and plan a future. The city and the mill have coexisted harmoniously since the 1970s. At one point, a zoning administrator called for the permanent closure of the mill because it had been unused for about a year during the pandemic. The passing of this weekend's deadline nullified that request. (wpde.com)
  2. Grand Strand Humane Society reported that two dogs were abandoned outside its facility recently. This caused the organization to put out a statement about the proper way to surrender pets. The shelter also mentioned that it is at capacity and staffing and volunteers are at an all-time low. The twin dogs were left at the shelter with a note saying "Please find them a great home. I tried my hardest to keep them but in the end, I couldn't." Thankfully, these two dogs were adopted quickly. The shelter says this is a scary time for everyone in animal welfare. (wpde.com)
  3. Horry County Animal Care Center has had to close its doors temporarily for the second time in less than a week because it needs to help law enforcement with an emergency animal investigation. Police brought in a large intake of animals with medical needs. While HCACC is taking care of the pets brought in from the investigation, it will not be able to conduct adoptions, accept owner surrenders or stray intakes. This case is unrelated to a case last Friday that caused HCACC to close. The facility is expected to be closed all day Tuesday. (WMBF)
  4. The city of North Myrtle Beach is defending its beach-equipment ordinance as it responds to a federal lawsuit filed last week by Cherry Grove Beach Gear. The city is accused of restricting the beach equipment company from competing with the city itself, which also provides beach equipment to beachgoers. The city says its law limiting commercial activity on beaches has been in place for many years. (WBTW)
  5. Did you ever think you would be rejoicing over gasoline priced at $3.37 a gallon? Myrtle Beach area gas prices have dropped about 11 cents per gallon during the past week, but that's still 67 cents per gallon higher than the price a year ago. Prices on the Grand Strand still range anywhere from $3.37 at the lowest, all the way up to $4.75. The national average sits at $4.01 per gallon and should be falling below $4 by the time you read this. (WMBF)

We just can't get enough of the beautiful sunrises here in Myrtle Beach! Here's another stunning pic from reader Judy Banas, who captured this shot recently near Doolittle Lake. Thanks for the pretty pic, Judy!

From my notebook:

  • The Craftsmen's Summer Classic Art and Festival finished up its 40th anniversary at Myrtle Beach Convention Center on Sunday. The popular event featuring handmade wares from all around the U.S. has been named the Top 20 event by the Southeast Tourism Society a few times. This year there were 130 vendors at the show. (WMBF)

  • Need a job? See who is hiring in the Myrtle Beach area. Full-time and part-time positions are available all around the Grand Strand in various industries. Listings compiled by Patch and ZipRecruiter. (Myrtle Beach Patch)
  • Firefighters in Pawleys Island rescued an orange tabby cat that was trapped under a car in McDonald's parking lot. The fluffy feline had a bit of a hissing match with the crew, but after about an hour they were able to successfully extract her from the car. The crew named her Mac, for obvious reasons. Interested families have already come forward wishing to adopt Mac. (wpde.com)
  • Can you spare $5 to save dogs and cats? This is Clear the Shelters Week 2022. Hill's pet foods will award a $5,000 grant to the two shelters that receive the most individual donations August 8 through 14. No amount is too small. The challenge is to get the most transactions during those dates. (Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach via The Animal Rescue Site)
  • It's not unusual to see sharks along the Grand Strand, but seeing one this close to shore can be a little rare. Beachgoer Jennifer Barwick snapped some photos of a shark near the breaking waves on a Pawleys Island beach after getting herself out of the water quickly. (WBTW)

Now you're in the loop and ready to head out the door on this Tuesday. I'll see you Wednesday with the mid-week edition of the Myrtle Beach Daily!

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
