Here are the top 5 stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Police have arrested and charged a man for murder and first degree burglary for the strangulation death of a 74-year-old woman in Little River. The death occurred on December 4th in the woman's apartment on Greenbriar Drive. The woman was identified as Kathleen Fielis. The person who was arrested has the same last name, but authorities are not forthcoming with the exact relationship between the two. The man is being held without bond at Rueben Detention Center. 2. A piece of equipment being transported along Highway 31 hit a bridge on Enterprise Road Tuesday, causing damage and road closures. The Enterprise Road bridge crosses over Highway 31, creating a big mess for traffic. There was no update, as of the time of this posting, about when the repairs will be completed. The SC Department of Transportation is working on a repair plan. (WBTW) (WMBF)
  3. This is looking like a tennis match! After the Planning Commission came back with a hard "no" last week, Horry County Council gave the thumbs up to a proposed RV park on Highway 544. Nearby residents are miffed about additional traffic, while Council member Johnny Vaught opined that the only traffic issue is the lack of an exit lane where the campground would be located. (WMBF)
  4. Coronavirus cases in Horry County as of December 12th are up by about 31 percent over the previous week. Horry County is currently considered a high level of transmission area. The data comes from the CDC and is auto-generated for its reports. The report indicates that there is a national upward trend in COVID cases at this time. (Myrtle Beach Patch)
  5. In a continuing effort to revitalize the immediate downtown area of the city, Myrtle Beach Council leaders approved a measure that will allow them to acquire some real estate parcels between Ocean Boulevard and the new Arts and Innovation District which is currently being developed. The acquisition includes seven motels, a vacant lot, and a number of commercial properties that were already for sale when the purchase was first considered. The cost will be about $15 million. Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
