Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. United States Marshals have arrested an individual in the July 3 sexual assault of a Surfside Beach woman. The man, Lotorey Jermaine Greene, Jr., was seen on a city surveillance camera, which led to him being identified as the perpetrator. He was arrested in his Deerfield community residence without incident. Greene is charged with multiple offenses including first degree burglary, first degree criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping. He was out on bond for a previous arrest of breaking into vehicles at the time of the sexual assault. (wpde.com) (WMBF)
  2. Two cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in South Carolina, according to a report from the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control. One case is a person in the Midlands region of the state, while the other person is located in the Lowcountry region. Both individuals are being monitored until they are no longer infectious and will be isolated if necessary. Monkeypox reportedly spreads by skin-to-skin contact. (Myrtle Beach Patch)
  3. Traffic on Highway 17 in Litchfield By The Sea must have been snarled on Friday morning when a 400-year-old live oak tree fell onto a worker's vehicle as he was driving. Howard Cook, who works for Coatings2Go, said he heard a crack and then the tree fell on the front of his vehicle. He and his crew inside the truck were all fine, but they had to climb out of the truck's windows to escape. Cook says he's thankful to be alive and is looking forward to a camping trip with his family next week. The northbound lanes of Ocean Highway were closed north of Willbrook Boulevard and cars were rerouted onto a frontage road until crews cleared the tree from the road. (wpde.com)
  4. Grand Strand Nissan reports that they have "maybe six" new cars in stock, as the dealership continues to struggle with limited inventory due to the nationwide shortage of computer chips and equipment. All makes and models of new cars are affected, causing an all-time low in new car availability across the country. The problem started in mid-2020 during the height of the pandemic, and it seems to be getting worse instead of better. Grand Strand Nissan's general sales manager says the low inventory is unprecedented. Cars are coming in, very, very slowly. The dealership has been surviving thanks to pre-owned vehicle sales. People wanting a new car should expect a wait time from one week to up to four months. That's not all — MSRP has increased nearly ten percent. (WBTW)
  5. The Horry County Planning Commission has deferred a vote on a proposed housing development on Highway 707 in Murrells Inlet. Folks who live in the area voiced their objections to the new development which would bring in 300 homes on about 22 acres in the already crowded neighborhood near the Prince Creek section of town. Concerns include traffic, property values, drainage, utilities, flooding and inadequate road infrastructure. (WMBF)

From my notebook:

  • The 5th annual PickMe SC Adoption Event is happening now through July 17 throughout the state of South Carolina. Animal shelters, rescues, Petco Stores and others are offering low-fee or free adoptions to find families for over 1,500 dogs and cats. Southern shelters were notorious for many years for being "high-kill" facilities, and the no-kill shelter movement has been hugely successful on the Grand Strand in particular. The No-Kill SC 2024 project wants people to consider giving a homeless pet a second chance at finding a family to love. (PickMeSC.org)
  • Myrtle Beach State Park had a major milestone recently. During the first three weeks of June, more than two million visitors came to the park — the largest recorded attendance ever for MBSP. The state park has had to close several times already this year when the parking lots filled up. Occupancy rates for camping at MBSP are more than one-and-a-half times higher than they were during the pandemic, when everybody was trying to find social-distance-friendly activities! (wpde.com)
  • Myrtle Beach Area Chamber Of Commerce has joined more than 115 Convention and Visitors Bureau leaders across the U.S. to show collective support of colleagues from underrepresented communities. MBACC president, Karen Riordan signed Destinations International's Allyship Commitment Letter that affirms the need for diversity, equity and inclusion within the tourism industry. (Press Release Desk)
  • The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber Of Commerce also reported that the organization's sales manager, Pam Wright, has won the ACCE 2021-22 Sales Award. Wright will be presented with the award on July 27 at the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives annual convention in Indianapolis. (Press Release Desk)
  • Messy and Dirty Mondays are back in Murrells Inlet! The Lowcountry Community Church (LC3) is operating its MAD Mondays program again this summer. The program is for first through sixth graders and runs every Monday from July 11 through August 1 starting at 5:30 p.m. Kids have dinner, play games and music, or just have an evening of messy fun together for the next several Monday nights. (WCBD News 2)
  • North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue has updated its residency requirements for city firefighters. Personnel are no longer restricted by a previous rule requiring applicants to have a primary residence in Horry County. The new requirement allows residents within a 50-mile radius of NMB City Hall to become NMB firefighters. Applications are being accepted until July 14. (North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue via Facebook)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
