(Patch Media)

Hi y'all. It's Friday, July 1, 2022 and I'm back with your fresh edition of the Myrtle Beach Daily. Let's get this day, and this month, started off right, with a quick dive into the most important things going on in town these days.

Let's begin with a look at Friday's weather:

Thunderstorms. High: 80 Low: 73.

Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Charges have been filed and a man is in custody for the murder of Socastee woman Teresa Lischer who was shot and killed inside her home in May. The man was charged with murder with "malice aforethought," and booked into Long Detention Center. Teresa Lischer was 58 years old and was the mother of two adult males in their 20s. She was a registered nurse. (WBTW)
  2. A Columbia woman was charged by Horry County for violating the county's animal care and treatment ordinance after leaving a dog inside a car last weekend, causing the dog's death. The outside temperature was 95 degrees, and the dog was left in a car in the parking lot of the outlets at Factory Store Boulevard. Passersby reported the matter, and police responded. They attempted to provide medical aid to the animal, and rushed it to a nearby veterinarian, but the dog died from heat-related internal injuries. The woman was fined $500. Police remind people to report these incidents, as was done in this case. (wpde.com)
  3. During a special meeting on Wednesday, the North Myrtle Beach City Council amended its single-use plastic bag ban. The amendment allows the use of plastic bags with a thickness of 2.25 mils or more by retailers in the city. Council will revisit the plastic bag ban in two years. The reason for the amendment and delay is supply chain issues that prevent businesses from obtaining paper bags and reusable shopping bags. This is the third time the ban has been postponed. (WMBF)
  4. At the same meeting, City Council passed a new ordinance that is affecting a beach wares business that's been operating for the past two years. A local couple runs a business in Cherry Grove providing beach chairs, umbrellas and other beach supplies for vacationers. The couple had requested a franchise agreement but the city refused to issue one to them, and now Council passed an ordinance that says only someone with a franchise may set up beach wares services on the beach. The couple feels they are being singled out. (Myhorrynews)
  5. Two Carolina OB/GYN offices distributed free baby formula for parents having difficulty finding the product in stores due to major shortages on Thursday. The health centers in Murrells Inlet and Georgetown handed out free bags including Enfamil NeuroPro baby formula while supplies lasted, on a one-bag-per-person basis. (WMBF)

Are you a Myrtle Beach resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)

To learn more, visit Masterworks.io, where Myrtle Beach Daily readers can skip the waitlist.

We kick off July with this stunning photo of darkening skies over Myrtle Beach, sent in by CJ Johnson. Thanks for the beautiful pic, CJ. It just goes to show you, even when a storm is brewing, the Grand Strand is still gorgeous!

Eleven-year-old Driver is a Golden Retriever who, along with his human, Bill, have been volunteering as a therapy team for many years. Their main focus is bereavement support. The pair volunteer at Grand Strand Medical Center and South Strand Medical. Happy retirement, Driver! (wpde.com)
  • Myrtle Beach Area Chamber Of Commerce: For the month of July, customers of Tidal Creek Beer Garden can celebrate "Christmas In July" by rounding up their bill to give proceeds to the Substitutes for Santa program. Read the link for full details. (Press Release Desk)

  • North Myrtle Beach Police: Breaking and entering into vehicles is on the rise. After a fun day on the beach or visiting attractions, no one wants to come out to see that their vehicle has been broken into. It only takes a thief a few minutes to take your belongings from an unlocked car. Remove all valuables and lock your vehicle. (North Myrtle Beach Police via Facebook)
  • All 4 Paws donation drive this Saturday! Please help stock All 4 Paws shelter supplies by dropping off needed items or even monetary donations. Open 10-5 Friday and 10-4 Saturday at Inkwood Crafters, 12270 Hwy 17 Bypass in Murrells Inlet (on the access road in front of Home Depot). [Post by Leah Pitre on NextDoor]. (Nextdoor)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
