Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. A man died after an ocean rescue on Saturday in North Myrtle Beach. The man was rescued from the ocean around 2:20 p.m. that afternoon off the beaches of 16th Avenue South in the city of North Myrtle Beach. First responders were called by a lifeguard on duty and beach patrol used an external defibrillator on the man while CPR was given. Horry County Fire Rescue and NMB Fire Rescue personnel arrived on scene shortly to assist. The man was brought to Grand Strand Medical Center North, where he was pronounced dead. (WBTW)
  2. The brand-new fire Station 13 is up and running in Longs. Horry County Fire Rescue officially began handling calls from the new location on Saturday. The new facility is next to the old Station 13 on Highway 9. (WBTW)
  3. Ex-Horry County deputy Stephen Flood's charges were lessened on Friday, but his 18 year prison sentence remains unaltered. Two charges of involuntary manslaughter were dropped because the law states that a person cannot be punished with two crimes for each death. Flood is charged with two counts of reckless homicide for the drowning deaths of Wendy Newton and Nicolette Green. He received a nine-year sentence for each count. A jury found him guilty last week. (WMBF)
  4. The first ever Georgetown Food, Beer & Wine Festival took place on Saturday, and hundreds turned out to sample refreshments served by several local restaurants. The event was held on Front Street, and gave business owners a chance to connect with the community. Local craftspeople and live entertainers were on hand as well. Proceeds from the event benefitted Friendship Place. (wpde.com)
  5. Sunday, we talked about traffic re-routing for Memorial Day in Myrtle Beach. Here's another article showing additional traffic tips and info, as well as beach rules, city rules, military appreciation events and curfew requirements for juveniles applicable during Memorial Day and otherwise. Other cities and areas along the Grand Strand may have different rules, so be sure to learn about your specific area before visiting. (WBTW)

Many thanks to reader Deidre Scott for another great photo! This one is of the Intracoastal Waterway from the rear deck of the Anchor Café. No two Grand Strand sunsets or sunrises are ever the same, but they are always beautiful!

Travelers who do not have a REAL ID, will not be able to use their driver's license as identification for air travel anymore after May 3,2023. REAL ID compliance is indicated on a photo ID by a gold star in the upper right corner. This paragraph is a correction of an error posted earlier today that stated REAL ID was already in effect. Apologies for the error. (SCDMV)
  • From shelter to classroom, the Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach's Humane Education Program is available for classrooms around the area. The sessions cover humane concepts and help students develop compassion, kindness and respect for animals, humans and the environment. You're officially in the loop for Monday, folks. I'll be back Tuesday morning with a new edition of the Myrtle Beach Daily!

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
