Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- A 21-year-old man was convicted of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime in the North Myrtle Beach shooting death of Tyler Schaeffer that occurred in 2019. Sebastian Kaisk was sentenced by Honorable Circuit Judge H. Steven DeBerry to nearly five decades in prison. (WMBF)
- COVID decline could mean 'calm' ahead for the Carolinas, but it all depends on our actions, says SC's Public Health Director, Dr. Brannon Traxler. The doctor says she's hopeful for a time frame where SC will have some people with natural immunity and some with vaccine-induced immunity. The number of cases in South Carolina dropped 45% from last week, and 65% from two weeks ago. Traxler noted there are two cases of the Omicron subvariant reported in SC. Traxler believes we have the opportunity to start looking toward the future. Out of the 103 fully-vaccinated people who died from COVID-19, 98% of them had pre-existing health conditions, Traxler said. (wpde.com)
- With Horry County having a large number of HOA communities to begin with, it's probably not surprising to hear that the county had the most HOA complaints submitted to the SC Department of Consumer Affairs last year. The community with the most complaints was Brighton Lakes, with 13 complaints filed. The department received 263 HOA complaints from Horry County, according to its Homeowners Association Complaint Report. (WBTW)
- FEMA is seeing a lot of action from Horry County, too. The Federal Emergency Management Agency received a record number of requests for flood-mitigation grant programs in 2021. April O'Leary of Horry County Rising says the county is aggressively pursuing funding opportunities, but there is a great deal of competition from other states and territories. (WBTW)
- More than 900 former Horry County students are eligible to receive diplomas previously denied to them after a new law passes. Act-155 eliminated the need for an exit examination as a requirement for graduation, starting with the graduating class of 2015. Changes to the law are making it retroactive to 1990, thus enabling hundreds of former students to apply for their diplomas. Horry County Schools Adult Education department is ready to help applicants who would like to apply. (WPDE)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
