Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. The Grand Strand is gearing up for Myrtle Beach Bike Week Spring Rally, now in its 83rd year. Businesses have already gotten started ahead of Friday's kick-off, with the Harley dealerships posting on Facebook and placing motorcycles on display in their parking lots. Organizers are anticipating a banner year, especially now that COVID is more or less in the rearview mirror. There are tons of festivals and events from north to south along the Strand. Bring your safety, carefulness, and patience. Above all, have a great time! (WMBF)
  2. South Carolina Highway Patrol has arrested and charged a 31-year-old woman in the hit-and-run crash that killed a bicyclist on May 5. The crash occurred near the PirateLand Camping Resort on Highway 17 Business near Catherine Avenue. The driver, Brittany Raven Lewis, of Gresham, SC was charged with hit and run duties of a driver involving death. The victim's name has not been released. (MyHorryNews.com)
  3. The Barefoot Swing Bridge in North Myrtle Beach is still not fully operational several days after it was stuck in the open position. For now, a crew of nine people needs to open the bridge twice a day with what looks like a gigantic skeleton key. The bridge is opened twice daily, for boats to pass, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The process is lengthy, and the bridge reportedly stays open for a couple hours. It is strongly suggested that drivers use alternate routes until the bridge's mechanisms are repaired. Contractors are looking at the situation to evaluate what exactly needs to be done. (WMBF)
  4. One of the most popular bakeries in the area, Benjamin's Bakery in Surfside, is feeling the pinch of a couple of difficult years. Owner Lee Zulanch says wages and labor have created an unknown situation lately. He has also needed to increase prices because of supply chain issues. The bakery not only makes its own fresh goods, but also supplies wholesale ingredients to over 100 local restaurants. Thanks to his loyal customers, Zulanch has been doing all right during these challenging times. (wpde.com)
  5. Four new principals will begin new jobs at Horry County schools on July 1. Shauna Schubiger, Nick Harris, Ryan Poston and Brandice Gore were all appointed as principals at various schools in the county for the 2022-23 school year. (WBTW)

Myrtle Beach pic of the day:

Wednesday's pic of the day comes from Deidre Scott who took this picture recently in Grand Dunes' Golf Village Members Club on the third hole. Nice shot, Dee! (see what I did there?)

  • The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach: Today's #adoptionsuccessstory is brought to you by @aAtlantic Heating & Cooling of North Myrtle Beach. Tyson originally came to our shelter in February 2019 as a little puppy. He temporarily lost the use of his back legs, due to an unknown cause. Tyson eventually regained full strength! He was adopted, but, unfortunately, returned a year later. Luckily for him, Jasmine entered his life in March. They have changed each other's lives and are ready for their next adventure. (Facebook)

You're all caught up for Wednesday, Grand Strand. I'll see you Thursday for another installment of the Myrtle Beach Daily!

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
