Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- Myrtle Beach city council approved several things during this week's meeting. The approvals include nearly $1 million for road resurfacing projects within Myrtle Beach, and adding resource officers at elementary and primary schools. Council voted against adding restrictions to gas stations in the city. (MyHorryNews.com) See also: (MyHorryNews.com) and (MyHorryNews.com)
- An outdoor mural highlighting Myrtle Beach's 'claims to fame' is going to be painted in Nance Plaza. The mural, designed by Leadership Grand Strand Class 42 will be painted on a building at 9th Avenue North. The claims to fame depicted will be: shag dancing, beach music, golf, and the SkyWheel. (WMBF)
- The North Myrtle Beach Planning Commission voted in favor of new zoning for Crescent Beach. The decision could bring a couple of large hotels to the neighborhood's main thoroughfare on 17th Avenue South. The initial plan sparked an uproar from community members. That led to a compromise plan, which was approved this week, but people living in the neighborhood still are not fans of the project. (WMBF)
- Habitat for Humanity is now accepting applications for its homebuyer program in both Georgetown and Horry counties. Applicants must meet some requirements, such as having resided in their county for at least one year, certain income limits, and must demonstrate a need for affordable housing. The program is one year to 18 months long, and requires some classes and sweat equity before a home can be purchased with an interest-free mortgage. (wpde.com)
- Some pretty cool drone photos by ABC15 of the Surfside Beach Pier construction were released this week. The construction companies involved, and the town of Surfside Beach, hopes that the pier will be fully operational by March 2023. The pier was destroyed by Hurricane Matthew in 2016. Town Council approved a resolution to set up a Surfside Pier Committee. (wpde.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
