Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Multiple social media posts threatening Myrtle Beach Middle School were handled quickly by Myrtle Beach police and SLED late Wednesday night. The team's K9 units inspected the school and authorities gave the green light for the building to be used by Thursday morning. Extra officers were assigned to all Myrtle Beach schools on Thursday as a precaution. Parents received automated telephone alerts — the first on Wednesday night announcing the threat, and another Thursday morning stating that the school was safe. - The city of Myrtle Beach is recognizing today as Gun Violence Awareness Day. City officials are encouraging discussions about gun violence and safety precautions within the community, especially asking parents to talk with children about gun violence awareness. The day was created to honor 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton who was killed in a 2013 shooting. (wpde.com)
- Conway police are asking for the public's help in locating the missing Timmy the Turtle statue that was on display outside the Bonfire Restaurant. The bronze statue weighs 50 pounds, and was made for the Conway Critters project in conjunction with Coastal Carolina University students. Anyone with info is asked to call (843) 248-1790. (WBTW)
- Visitors to Market Common's Warbird Park can utilize a new digital experience that was developed by a 17-year-old Eagle Scout. Cole Smith created a QR code that will enable visitors to scan the Wall of Service in the park with a smartphone and quickly locate veterans by name. Smith also placed QR codes in other places throughout the park, linking to videos he created about the history of the community. (WBTW)
- Surfside Beach Police were called to the New China Buffet on Sunday on reports of a man inappropriately touching a child in a bathroom at the restaurant. According to reports, an employee of the restaurant went into the women's restroom and grabbed the 9-year-old girl by the arms and lifted her off the ground, twice. The report also said the man blocked the child from leaving the restroom. The man was arrested and charged with third-degree assault and battery, and kidnapping. He is being held on $26,000 bond. Are you a Myrtle Beach resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?
Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.
Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.
Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:
- Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
- Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
- Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)

- Hurricane season has begun. This year marks the 200th anniversary of two well-known Grand Strand ghost stories. The Gray Man of Pawleys Island is thought to appear to warn people about hurricanes. The legend began in 1822. The same year, during the storm known as The Great Storm of 1822, a home was ripped off its foundation and fell into the water in Withers Swash. People say that during storms, a home can be seen floating towards the ocean near Withers Swash. (wpde.com)
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced the prediction of an above-normal Atlantic hurricane season, with the potential of more than a dozen named storms. Officials say the Grand Strand is "well overdue" for catastrophic weather. Regardless of predictions, residents here should always have a plan in place for possible evacuation, medication, supples and a plan for your pets. (Myhorrynews)
- Be prepared for hurricanes! A local organization in Murrells Inlet has provided hurricane prep items for residents of Horry and Georgetown counties. About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
