Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- WRNN's Dave Priest and Joe Cats interviewed local author, Caleb Wygal, Monday morning on The Hot Talk Morning Show. Wygal's latest book is being released today. The book, Death Washes Ashore, is the second book in his Myrtle Beach mystery series. Wygal, a stay-at-home-dad for the last few years, writes in the early morning hours, and hopes to write full-time when his child begins elementary school. Death Washes Ashore is his sixth book. Wygal is doing in-person book signings around the Grand Strand this month, and had a successful pre-release party over the weekend at Benjamin's Bakery in Surfside Beach where he signed some books and read some pages aloud. - An artist's rendering shows how Myrtle Beach's 'City Square' may look once the Arts and Innovation District redevelopment project is completed. The illustration was brought to city council by the Downtown Development Office last week. The depiction shows a westerly view overlooking Oak Street at the intersection of 8th Avenue North. Rehab is already underway on 9th Avenue North near Main Street. (WMBF)
- Authorities have released the name of the person killed in a shooting at Fantasy Harbour Boulevard and Waccamaw Boulevard on Sunday morning. The man was identified as 32-year-old Diego Rodrigo Arias Santana, who was from Mexico and in Myrtle Beach on a work visa, according to Horry County Police. (WPDE)
- North Myrtle Beach voted on whether or not to contribute $1.7 million annually toward the Interstate 73 connection project. The city approved that it will contribute that amount yearly for an unspecified number of years. Certain criteria must be fulfilled before the city can contribute. Factors such as when construction will begin, and what other counties will participate are among the issues discussed. (WMBF)
- Liberty Steel Mill in Georgetown has been closed for many months due to the pandemic, with dozens of employees out of work. The company announced that the mill will resume operations in mid-January, bringing 65 employees back to work and focusing on customer backlog as well as improvements to the processes and efficiency protocols. The company's other plant in Peoria, Illinois will work together with the Georgetown plant in getting things rolling. The company came to Georgetown in 2018, after the steel mill had been closed for three years. (WMBF) (WPDE)

From my notebook:
- Cookie Monster is back at Litchfield Restaurant! The scarecrow that was placed on the diner's property was assumed to have been stolen, but that happily was not the case! Instead, Cookie Monster participated in a Toys for Tots fundraiser that brought in $1,800! The eatery owners had even set up an Oscar the Grouch figurine outside the diner, with signage demanding the release of Cookie Monster whom, they said, was being held hostage to raise money for Toys for Tots. The "ransom" was paid, and the Muppet is back at the diner, looking for... what else? Cookies! (WPDE)
- Netflix is releasing a new documentary about Myrtle Beach Safari owner, Doc Antle. The infamous wildlife park owner became well known after being featured in the network's "Tiger King" series. Antle was indicted for wildlife trafficking last year after allegedly moving three lion cubs from an animal park in Virginia to Myrtle Beach Safari. The documentary premieres on December 10th on the streaming platform. (WBTW)

- The Murrells Inlet Christmas Parade was a huge hit last weekend. Thousands lined the parade route near the MarshWalk in near-perfect weather. There were nearly 300 floats in the parade, and a toy collection was on-site as well. (WMBF)
- Myrtle Beach Professional Firefighters Association hosted its 11th annual pancake breakfast last weekend, too. Local firefighters joined in to help children in need with donations generated from the event. The association uses the donation money to get presents for approximately 40 community children. The organization is also taking donations online. (WPDE)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
