Here are the top 5 stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. Local police have busted up a counterfeit goods scheme in the Myrtle Beach area. Myrtle Beach Police arrested 18 people, seized $15,000 worth of goods, and recovered about $1,700 worth of stolen items in the shoplifting operation. The 18 individuals arrested were named publicly. Most of them were charged with shoplifting, and a few face additional charges. (WBTW)
  2. The Horry County Coroner's office has revealed that the victim of that hit-and-run on Breezewood Boulevard on Dec. 17 was a 75-year-old man. Louis Fischer was hit by an unknown vehicle in the Socastee neighborhood, and died at the hospital. Authorities are still looking for the driver and vehicle. (WBTW)
  3. Grand Strand Medical Center was named one of America's 100 best hospitals according to Healthgrades who released its "100 best" list this week. The press release indicates that the hospital was recognized in several categories including spine surgery, stroke care, critical care and gastrointestinal surgery. (WMBF)
  4. Residents have voiced their concerns and opinions about the 23 acres of land Horry County purchased last week near Carolina Forest Boulevard. The County paid $1.5 million for the acreage along Highway 31 for construction of an interchange that will connect Augusta Plantation Drive to Revolutionary War Way and eventually alleviate traffic problems. Some neighbors are not happy, but others are in favor of the project. (WMBF)
  5. The owners of Myrtle Beach Games have opened a second store in Conway on Main Street. The first location is on Socastee Boulevard in Myrtle Beach. The stores each offer game nights, but the main business is board games. Chris Steele, one of the co-owners of the stores, says board games are a great way to bring people together face-to-face — something we have all been missing lately. (WPDE)

  • North Myrtle Beach Police: Let's not forget about our girl Jolene as part of the team. She didn't get included in the previous post about our new North Myrtle Beach JR K9 Unit. • If you're visiting the area for the holidays, or if you're a local looking to start 2022 in a new home, you might want to check out these four upcoming open houses in the Myrtle Beach area. (Myrtle Beach Patch)
  • Travelers arriving and departing Myrtle Beach International Airport weighed in on how the Omicron COVID-19 variant may be impacting their travel plans. The overall impression was that most travelers going through MYR were not worried about catching Omicron. Some employees who work at the airport expressed concern about interacting with lots of people, but said they are taking every precaution available. (wpde.com)
  • Survey results from United Way of Horry County reveal that one in four people in the County needed substance abuse help last year. The organization had sent out a community needs assessment during the height of COVID-19, and found that a lot of people self-medicated with alcohol and other kinds of drugs during that time. United Way handled 6,000 referrals for substance abuse last year. (WBTW)
  • It doesn't get much better than a 1972 Volkswagen Beetle decked out with Christmas decorations. A teen from Carolina Forest did just that with the vehicle. He had previously decorated the VW as a pumpkin for Halloween. The 19-year-old followed along in "Santa's Buggy" behind Santa Claus as he traveled with Horry County Fire Rescue recently. About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
