Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. Starting today, the City of Myrtle Beach will begin installing new pedestrian handrails along Ocean Boulevard. The handrails will be along the sidewalk starting at 7th Avenue North and going to 12th Avenue North. The work will begin in the overnight hours and finish mid-morning each day to avoid traffic disruption. There will not be any road closures. The project is scheduled to take about eight weeks to complete. Funding for the $1.1 million project includes a $250,000 grant from the state of South Carolina. (WBTW)
  2. Several Grand Strand businesses have pulled together to help the owners of Neal and Pam's Restaurant after a fire damaged the building. Surfside Tavern is holding a fundraiser today at 5 p.m. Half of the proceeds from a 50/50 raffle will be given to the staff and crew of Neal and Pam's. Other bars and restaurants have offered temporary employment to Neal and Pam's employees while the repairs have them out of work. The restaurant will reopen as soon as possible. (wpde.com)
  3. The Chirping Birds Society is asking people to participate in Plastic-Free July on the Grand Strand. The environmental advocacy group wants to raise awareness of plastic pollution. It held a small demonstration to focus on the issue in Surfside Beach at Walmart Neighborhood Market over the weekend. The group showed how much plastic it collected in the town, and suggested substitute materials and small changes that can be made to lower the impact. Surfside Beach does have a single-use plastic bag ban, but it is not strictly enforced. (WMBF)
  4. Coastal Carolina University's Melissa Jefferson was crowned 2022 World Champion along with her USA teammates at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon Saturday night. The former Chanticleer sprinter and her 4 X 100 meter relay team made history by recording the best time for the sprint relay event and the fifth-fastest time ever. Jefferson also placed eighth in the women's 100-meter finals. (wpde.com)
  5. Expert realtors along the Grand Strand don't anticipate the housing market to crash any time soon. Data collected by Coastal Carolina Associations of Realtors shows that the number of homes sold has decreased while the number of available properties has increased. A slowdown is happening, but homes are still going under contract quickly in the Myrtle Beach area. It now takes a few days for a property to go under contract, rather than a few hours with multiple offers that was the norm during the pandemic. (WBTW)

  • As July draws to a close, the folks at Kind Keeper Animal Rescue have only raised $1,176 of the $20,000 they needed from July's 30-day Donation Challenge. Only 28 people donated. If every follower of the rescue on Facebook alone donated $5, then Kind Keeper would have raised $100K! We can do better for all the shelters in our area. No amount is too small. Please consider donating to this great organization. (Kind Keeper Animal Rescue via Facebook)

Alrighty, you're all caught up for Monday, everybody! I'll be back Tuesday with all the Grand Strand news you can handle! Until then, stay cool and be safe!

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
