Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. A Myrtle Beach woman is in custody at Long Detention Center this weekend after being arrested for putting her dog inside a trash compactor at the Solid Waste Authority on Jones Road. The incident happened on June 9. The 61-year-old woman was determined to be the dog's owner, and is accused of "intentionally and neglectfully abandoning" the dog. She was charged under Horry County's animal care and treatment ordinance, and was arrested after authorities received a tip from a community member. The dog is in the care of HC Animal Care Center, and is not yet up for adoption. (WMBF)
  2. Golf cart owners in North Myrtle Beach are expressing disappointment at the city's golf cart ban during Thursday night "Music On Main" concerts. The music series happens every Thursday during the summer at the Horseshoe Stage on Ocean Boulevard. Up until now, anyone using golf carts could park near the seating area. This year, the city banned golf cart parking, and designated the area as an overflow pedestrian zone. A group of golf cart owners attended a city council meeting last week to express their grievances, but they were denied that opportunity. The group will address council at a future meeting. 3. Horry County will have a public workshop to receive input about improvements to roads in Garden City on June 28 at 5 p.m. at the Inlet Square Mall. The county would like feedback from people who live and work in the area. Specific concerns will be addressed regarding Waccamaw Drive and Atlantic Avenue. Some of the improvements that are being considered include bicycle lanes and pedestrian accommodations. (WBTW)
  4. The City of North Myrtle Beach is dedicating the Waccamaw River Swamp Bridge to fallen NMB officer, Sgt. Gordon Best. The dedication will happen Monday, June 20 at 10 a.m., at the Chris Anderson Boat Landing. Family, friends, colleagues and city officials will attend the ceremony. Best was killed when he lost control of his vehicle on January 1, 2021 while responding to a call at Barefoot Resort. (WMBF)
  5. A $5,000 grant from the American Cancer Society will enable Tidelands Health cancer patients to get help with transportation costs for treatment appointments by using a gasoline card. Most cancer patients rely on family or friends to bring them to treatment that can happen daily or weekly for long periods of time. The gas cards will help ease the burden on these patients and their caregivers, and allow them to devote attention to their health. (wpde.com) (WMBF)

  • Did you know? Juneteenth marks the liberation of slaves after the Civil War. On June 19, 1865, U.S. Army Major General Gordon Granger traveled to Galveston, Texas, to announce the Civil War was over and that slavery had ended. Juneteenth is a national holiday. About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
