Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. In a recent press release, Myrtle Beach Area Chamber Of Commerce reports that tax season has begun amid IRS backlogs dating back to the beginnings of COVID-19. Some processes that used to take a few months may now take up to eight or nine months, it said in the release. Experts recommend filing electronically, keeping excellent records, and using a professional tax preparer. (Press Release Desk)
  2. Surfside Beach's town council approved approximately $180,000 to be used toward a new police vehicle, cameras, and the pier. The money comes from last year's tax fund, and will be used to put surveillance cameras up near the beachfront, and a specially-equipped, low-speed vehicle. $155,000 of the funding is devoted to the ongoing pier restoration. (WBTW)
  3. The North Myrtle Beach Planning Commission is considering plans for an industrial park on Water Tower Road. The Palmetto Coast Industrial Park would bring in distribution centers and other businesses to occupy three warehouse buildings measuring three football fields in size each. The industrial park would be right off Highway 31 and would accommodate many different uses, bringing jobs to the community. The commission has delayed voting on the proposal. (WMBF)
  4. Have you ever heard of a 'donut hole' within a city or county? Well, there's one in Myrtle Beach, and the City Council is attempting to fill the donut holes in the city's jurisdiction. Some properties are owned by Horry County, but are surrounded by Myrtle Beach-owned properties. This creates problems with servicing such as police and fire departments, and utilities. County properties within a city need to be annexed according to South Carolina law. Property owners need to request annexation into the city. It's a rather complicated process. (WMBF)
  5. Honoring Black History: The town of Atlantic Beach was established in the 1930s for the Gullah Geechee people, who were denied access to beaches because of their race. For decades, Atlantic Beach was known as the "Black Pearl." Today, the area is a thriving community, with major annual events such as Atlantic Beach Bike Fest, and the Gullah Geechee Festival. Atlantic Beach became an independent town in 1966, and is the only "black-owned" oceanfront town in the United States. (WBTW)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
