Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- Myrtle Beach Police are preparing for next weekend's Carolina Country Music Fest. The department has listed road closures, some of which are already in effect beginning today, as people arrive on the Grand Strand ahead of the sold-out music festival. The road closures are almost exclusively in the downtown areas of Myrtle Beach. CCMF begins June 9 and goes through Sunday, June 12. (WMBF) (wpde.com)
- Tiger King's Doc Antle is likely to face money laundering charges. Antle was arrested and booked into Long Detention Center on Friday, but authorities have withheld information on the reason for his arrest. TMZ and the AP have suggested that he was arrested for money laundering. The charges should be revealed today after a court appearance in Florence. We will post an update as soon as the information becomes available. (WBTW)
- On Sunday, Horry County police honored Cpl. Dennis Lyden, the very first HCPD officer who was killed in the line of duty 22 years ago. Lyden was killed on June 5, 2000 during a traffic stop. The community got together on Sunday to honor Lyden's memory, service and sacrifice. Lyden served on the force for five years. (WMBF)
- The Paddle for PAALS kayaking fundraiser brought in $5,000 for disabled South Carolinians in need of service dogs. Palmetto Animal Assisted Living Services is the only program in the area that helps disabled people get service dogs. The organization had to close down during the pandemic and the kayaking event in Murrells Inlet on Saturday was aimed at bringing awareness to the organization and raising some much-needed money for them to return to operations. Dogs are provided for a variety of disabled people from veterans to kids with autism, to people with mobility issues. (wpde.com)
- Have you wondered when the busiest time to fly into and out of Myrtle Beach may be? According to data from Myrtle Beach International Airport, July is the busiest month for air traffic and passenger load. It's no surprise that Spirit Airlines has the most flights at MYR, responsible for 45% of all airport traffic. The data was compiled using numbers from 2019, to avoid skewed data from the pandemic. About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
