Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. Myrtle Beach Police say the department has issued approximately 7,200 traffic tickets this year — 2,000 more than this date a year ago. Residents have noticed the uptick in traffic headaches and more aggressive drivers than usual. The summertime population swells to upwards of 200,000 to 300,000 people as compared to the much lower off-season population. Police ask everyone to be patient, plan ahead and expect busier roads than normal. (WMBF)
  2. Take a look around and it's no surprise that our town is popular! A report from KeyData, a provider of vacation rental market data, listed Myrtle Beach as one of the top visited beach destinations for the July 4 holiday weekend. (wpde.com)
  3. A bicyclist was killed on Wednesday night near the area of Burcale Road and Clay Pond Road, about two miles north of Myrtle Beach, when a vehicle and the bike collided. According to South Carolina Highway Patrol, the bicyclist changed lanes and a person driving a Honda Accord hit the cyclist. The driver of the car was not injured. There are no other details at this time. (wpde.com) (WBTW)
  4. Crews responded to a deck collapse in Surfside Beach on Wednesday night. No one was taken to the hospital, but about 15 people signed medical waivers refusing medical transport or treatment. The deck collapse occurred at a home on the 6000 block of South Kings Highway. (WMBF) (WBTW)
  5. One of the four passengers that survived a boat crash on the Great Pee Dee River on July 5 described the experience as a freak accident that was horrible and traumatic. She says she's done with boating. Larisa Talsky, who has been boating her whole life, said she and her companions don't normally take the boat out on holiday weekends due to how busy the waterways are, but this year the group decided to go out the day after the holiday. The boat struck an object in the water, causing them to spin out and hit a tree on the river bank. Talsky called 911. When medics arrived, the group was split up and sent to different hospitals for treatment. Talsky said her sister is still hospitalized at Grand Strand Medical Center. Two of the passengers will likely be out of work for several months, and a family friend has set up a GoFundMe for them. (WBTW)

From my notebook:

  • Statewide update: Although not specific to our dear Grand Strand, attorney Alex Murdaugh has been charged with murder in the deaths of his wife and son. Murdaugh is already in jail and facing dozens of criminal charges. His wife, Maggie, and their son, Paul, were killed in June of 2021 at their home near Islandton. Murdaugh has repeatedly denied any role in their deaths. The indictment from a Colleton County grand jury accuses Murdaugh of killing his wife with a rifle, and killing his son with a shotgun. • The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach: Since posting Winston over a month ago, he has had zero applications😿 Winston is an all-gray handsome three-year-old male kitty, who is diabetic. He will need to receive daily insulin injections for the rest of his life and special food. The right person to be a loving cat parent to Winston must be out there! Check out his photo — he is too cute! (The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach via Facebook)
  • The Pet Supplies Plus and WRNN radio pet of the week is Maumas. She's an eight-year-old Pumi. That's a small Hungarian sheepdog that does not shed, and their hair stays short. Maumas spent most of her life as a puppy mill dog with a backyard breeder, and was neglected. She has some physical challenges, but not enough to slow her down. She would do best as an only dog, although she does like other dogs and she likes to chase cats in a playful way. She must be in a home without children because she tends to get a little nippy. Check out Maumas in the link! Maumas and several other dogs are available for adoption from Peace Love and Paws. (WRNN.net)
  • Meals on Wheels of Horry and Georgetown counties has put out the word that they need help bringing meals to isolated and housebound elders amid inflation and the growth of the area. Volunteers would help cook, package and deliver meals to clients in both counties. More details in the link, including how to apply to be a volunteer. (wpde.com)
  • Tidelands Health providers are writing unique 'prescriptions' — 30-day Brookgreen Gardens passes! The health network says walking at Brookgreen is good for the heart and soul. The partnership between Tidelands Health and Brookgreen is called "A Walk In The Garden" and it's designed to jumpstart physical activity by having people walk every day. To be eligible, patients must be 40 or older, be physically inactive and have a cardiovascular risk factor such as high blood pressure or diabetes. (WBTW)

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
