Hey, neighbors! It's me, Kathy Mandell, your host of the Myrtle Beach Daily. Let's get this Thursday, August 4, 2022 started off right, with a quick guide to the most important things happening in town these days.

First, Thursday continues the familiar weather pattern:

Humid with a t-storm or two. High: 88 Low: 78. Ocean temperature: 82.2 degrees.

Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. Governor Henry McMaster announced that another $25 million has been invested in Workforce Scholarship for the Future, a program that basically provides free tuition and fees for any adult or recent high school grad who wants to pursue a degree in specific fields where there is a shortage of workers. McMaster made the announcement on July 26. The governor will also be visiting Myrtle Beach today with the president of Darlington Raceway and a representative from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. The three will hold a press conference at Plyler Park at 11 a.m. (Press Release Desk) (Gov. Henry McMaster calendar)
  2. The city of North Myrtle Beach employees are being offered free training to qualify as a Class B CDL driver for the city. It's part of a recruitment and retention effort by the city to help keep workers. To qualify, employees must be in good standing and carry a job title that requires a CDL. Employees will be trained to operate dumpster and crane trucks and similar commercial vehicles. (WBTW)
  3. The victim of the shooting inside Nacho Hippo Restaurant in North Myrtle Beach has died. Police are preparing to upgrade the charges against the man's co-worker from attempted murder to murder. A murder warrant needs to be served after it is signed by a judge. Quentin Johnson and his attacker, Lafredia Todd, both worked at the restaurant. Johnson was taken to Grand Strand Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the head and died some time later at the hospital. (Myhorrynews)
  4. Teams at OCEARCH are watching the movements of a 1,400 pound great white shark carefully. The 13-foot-long shark pinged about 60 miles offshore near Myrtle Beach. The shark, named Breton for the place he was tagged in 2020 in Nova Scotia, is a long way from great whites' usual hangouts at this time of year. The majority of great white sharks are found off the coast of the Northeast U.S. or the Canadian Atlantic area. It's rare to find one in the warmer, southern waters off the Atlantic coast. It's also late in the year for one to stay this far south, as they are normally headed back to cooler waters by mid-May to early June. (wpde.com)
  5. The two Kentucky Mist Distillery locations on the Grand Strand may soon be experiencing shortages of the liquor because of the floods in Kentucky. The liquor is made at Kentucky Mist's main hub in Whitesburg, KY which was hit hard by the storms. The entire town was under water and cleanup is still underway. The company is currently not producing because of high water, a power outage and no internet. Locations here in Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach have enough inventory for now, but that may not last long. (WMBF)

Myrtle Beach pic of the day:

Reader Craig Northacker sent in this interesting photo. It's a tree along the Intracoastal Waterway at Sunset Park, with a plant growing on top! Craig snapped the photo while trying out his new phone's camera. Good eye, Craig!

That's it for Thursday. One of my colleagues is covering Friday's MB Daily for me tomorrow, but I'll be back Saturday morning with another update!

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
