🌱 Meet A Myrtle Beach Hero + Atlantic Beach Special Election Info

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Myrtle Beach.

(Patch Media)

Hello all. I'm here with your fresh copy of the Myrtle Beach Daily. Today is Saturday, December 3, 2022 and there are a ton of holiday events on the Grand Strand today! Keep reading to find out everything you need to know about what's happening locally, including updates on...

  • Meet Myrtle Beach Hero Shirley Oesterle!
  • Crazy Mason Milkshake Bar has outgrown its 400-square-foot kiosk at 810 Bowling!
  • Housing development updates and approvals.

Before I get to the weather and news, I wanted to let you all know that today is my last Myrtle Beach Daily newsletter. After a lengthy career, I am finally retiring to spend more time with my husband and pets. Expect the newsletter to continue with a new curator! It has been my absolute pleasure to bring you daily Grand Strand news during the last year and a half.

Now, let's get to it one more time!

Here's a peek at Saturday's weather:

Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. You may have noticed Patch's new initiative to recognize local heroes making a difference in the community. In Myrtle Beach, Shirley Oesterle was nominated by Dawn Bertelsen as our local hero. Shirley organizes Operation Shoe Box for Samaritan's Purse with more than 40 volunteers who help her through a Facebook group called Sassy Surfside Seniors. Shirley uses her dining room and garage to put together the packages for Operation Shoe Box. But she also does much, much more for the community: She makes Christmas cookies for people who are alone on the holidays, she makes personal hygiene bags for female prisoners and she gives baked goods to area police departments! Congratulations on the nomination, Shirley, and thank you for all you do for Myrtle Beach! (Myrtle Beach Patch)
  2. Four candidates have filed to run in a special election coming up January 17 for the Atlantic Beach Town Council seat that was vacated after councilman James DeWitt was killed. The winner of the nonpartisan special election will serve out the remainder of DeWitt's term through December 2025. Residents of Atlantic Beach who want to vote must be registered by December 6. (WBTW)
  3. 'Hate has no place in Horry County' is the message Horry County PD wants to send out after a rash of anti semitic flyers and materials have been circulating around the area. HCPD is committed to keeping the community safe and informed. At this time, they say there is no indication of a local threat relating to the materials, but they are staying vigilant and on top of the situation. (WMBF)
  4. The Crazy Mason Milkshake Bar is experiencing some growing pains at its 810 Billiards & Bowling location in Market Common. That's causing the company to relocate its small kiosk space to a larger location at 2461 Coastal Grand Circle near the Coastal Grand Mall. The move will be completed in March of 2023. (wpde.com)
  5. In other Market Common news, a proposed new housing development was denied by the Community Appearance Board because of the style of the homes being suggested. The project can still happen, but designers need to come up with a different look for the townhomes that are set to be built at the intersection of Meyers Avenue and Pampas Drive. (WMBF). Meanwhile, rezoning was approved by the Horry County Planning Commission for multi-family housing near Legends Golf Resort in Carolina Forest. (wpde.com)
