Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- A Florence, South Carolina family is asking the public to help find their missing family member who was last heard from during a phone call while she was in North Myrtle Beach. Ashlyn Adams Wyatt, 32, was last seen in Florence County. She is 5-foot, 3-inches tall and 105 pounds, with brown hair. She has been known to change her hair color and style occasionally. Anyone with info should contact Florence County Sheriff's Office at (843) 665-2121. (wpde.com)
- The city of North Myrtle Beach reported on water quality control and safety at NMB Park and Sports Complex on Friday. The water quality at Shark Wake Park 843 received a clean report. The outdoor body of water at the sports complex is permitted by SCDHEC as a natural swimming area. During the operational season, such bodies of water need to be sampled two times per month to analyze for various dangers including E. Coli bacteria. The water samples this year have always tested well below the maximum allowable thresholds set by DHEC. The city also reported on algae within the lake, stating that it is a non-toxic, non-harmful common green algae which does not pose a danger to anyone using the lake. The lake will be treated with an aquatic safe algaecide. (wpde.com)
- A 29-year-old Myrtle Beach man was arrested and charged with armed robbery, assault, resisting arrest, shoplifting and drug charges. The suspect is accused of shoplifting at Walmart in Surfside Beach, pulling a knife on a man who tried to stop him, elbowing and punching the arresting officer and possession of meth. (WBTW)
- Kind Keeper Animal Rescue is hitting the road today to take a dog to her forever home all the way in California! In an unusual move, the shelter decided the best way to get Emilia to her new home on the west coast would be for staffers to simply transport the two-year-old pooch themselves. The cross-country road trip will be documented on social media. The rescue could use more donations to cover the costs of gasoline, pet-friendly hotels and other travel expenses. Keep tabs on Emilia's journey by following Kind Keeper Animal Rescue on social media. (WMBF) (Kind Keeper No-Kill Animal Rescue via Facebook)
- Want to be a Little River homeowner? A new housing development is in progress off Mineola Avenue heading west from Highway 17. Creekside Point homes are starting in the $300,000 range. There are six floor plans to choose from between 1,542 to 2,412 square feet in size. The development will have an onsite amenities center including a pool and cabana. A fully-furnished model will be available to view in the fall, but you can make an appointment now by calling the number in the link. (Meritage Homes)

From my notebook:
- News13's Pet of the Weekend is Elizabeth, a 2-year-old black cat available from Grand Strand Humane Society. Elizabeth is a representative of National Black Cat Appreciation Month that's happening all through August — and that means the shelter is waiving adoption fees for all its black cats, including Elizabeth! This kitty was found under a dumpster in a parking lot last year along with her litter of kittens. The whole family went into foster care and all of Elizabeth's offspring were adopted, but she wasn't! (WBTW)
- The feel good story of the week comes from Keith B. who posted on NextDoor. Some readers may be familiar with a man and his dog who have been seen holding a sign near Highway 17 and Kings Highway. Keith wanted to give a huge shout out to Encore Shoe store near Walmart because the manager of Encore hired the man and his dog! Customers have seen the man working away in the store with his dog by his side. (NextDoor)
- Surfside Beach Pier was slated to open this month, but officials announced a delay until at least December, possibly into the spring of 2023. Meanwhile, check out these photos documenting progress on the rebuild! (wpde.com)
- Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce announced that Andrea Hardwick has been promoted to Oak Street Visitor Services Manager. Diana Greene and Andrea Hardwick will work together in operations at the visitor center with a whole host of responsibilities that take place behind the scenes for the 2,000 visitors that come to the Grand Strand visitor center each year. (MBACC)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
