Morning, people of Myrtle Beach! It's me again, Kathy Mandell, your host of the Myrtle Beach Daily. Today is Thursday, July 22, 2021. Here are the stories of the day: Longs' post office mobile unit is still not set up, Horry County parents are concerned about returning to school with the Delta variant circulating, the school district would like suggestions on how to spend funds it received from the American Rescue Plan, the MarshWalk in Murrells Inlet is getting a facelift while its restaurants carry on, and North Myrtle Beach tries to figure out how to tone down Main Street music that some find offensive.

How about a look at weather before we get going: Mostly sunny and humid throughout the day. High: 88 Low: 75.

Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. A month after fire destroyed the Longs, SC post office, a mobile unit that was delivered to the location has still not been set up. Customers with post office boxes are continuing to pick up their mail in North Myrtle Beach, and the USPS has not given a reason for the delay in installing new boxes and the mobile retail unit. (WBTW)
  2. The COVID-19 Delta variant is spreading, and with Horry County schools reopening in a few weeks, parents are expressing concern. Two health agencies have given conflicting recommendations regarding masking, and parents also have differing views. They do appreciate having options. The latest statement from HCS is that the county will follow the state's laws regarding masking protocols. (wpde.com)
  3. HC Schools are asking for input on how to spend $125 million that the county received from the American Rescue Plan. Part of the funds must be used toward learning loss created by the pandemic, but the rest can be spent elsewhere in accordance with federal government guidelines. The money will be spent during the next three years. (WBTW)
  4. Murrells Inlet MarshWalk is getting some much-needed repairs, and restaurants will remain open while the work takes place. Phase two of the project began on Wednesday. A decades-old section of the walkway (between the Dead Dog Saloon and the Claw House) was finished in Phase one. The work is being done in small sections so as not to disrupt business for the restaurants in the wildly popular area of the South Strand. (wpde.com)
  5. Another hot spot for tourists and locals to enjoy music and dining, the City of North Myrtle Beach, is trying to figure out ways to curtail the playing of "offensive music" at one of the bars on Main Street. Some of the music played regularly at one venue includes lyrics with profanity. Residents who live nearby can hear the music and have complained, but authorities have to keep free speech into consideration as they research how to proceed. (MyHorryNews)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
