Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. A 29-year-old kayaker was reported overdue and missing near Murrells Inlet, and Georgetown County authorities are searching for him along with the SCDNR, the Coast Guard, marine units, and other agencies. Vladimir Norman was last seen at 9:30 p.m. Saturday night when he reportedly was going fishing on the creek side of Murrells Inlet. He was using a blue and green kayak, and was wearing a tie-dyed shirt. As of the time of this posting, he has not been located. (Live 5 News WCSC) (WBTW)
  2. A vehicle accidentally driven off Glenns Bay Road into a retention pond became submerged on Saturday afternoon in Surfside Beach, but there were no injuries. Horry County Fire Rescue was called to the scene and assisted with removal of the vehicle. The occupant of the car was able to escape the vehicle, unharmed, before police arrived on scene. (wpde.com)
  3. If you thought tourism was over for the rest of 2021, not so fast! Grand Strand businesses spent the weekend welcoming football fans attending today's Myrtle Beach Bowl at Coastal Carolina University's Brooks Stadium. The game between Tulsa and Old Dominion will be also televised on ESPN. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. (WMBF)
  4. The 3rd Annual Darius Hemingway Toy Drive culminated Saturday with an event where kids got to choose a toy, or participate in festivities. Hemingway, who was murdered in October of 2020, had organized a local toy drive every year to help Grand Strand kids. His cousin, Jaylen Wright, now runs the event in his honor and memory. Donations were made at seven different drop-off centers during the past month or so. (wpde.com)
  5. Saturday also was the anniversary of the disappearance of Heather Elvis. The Socastee woman was 20 years old when she went missing on December 18, 2013. Her body has never been found, but two suspects were convicted in connection with Elvis' disappearance. Heather Elvis' family hosted a vigil in her honor on Saturday near Peachtree Boat Landing, where her abandoned car was found eight years ago. (WBTW)

  • Myrtle Beach doesn't want to be 'Dirty Myrtle' anymore! Most towns have a nickname or two, and most of the time those names are cute or catchy. Nobody really knows exactly how the unflattering handle for Myrtle Beach originated, but locals would prefer that it simply go away! (Hilton Head Island Packet)
  • Myrtle Beach first responders shopped with kids for holiday gifts and raised $5,000 during the "shop with a hero" event over the weekend. MBPD and MBFD shopped with about three dozen children for Christmas presents for the kids' families. Each child was given $200 toward purchases at Target on Seaboard Street. (WPDE)

You're officially in the loop for Monday, December 20, 2021. I'll be back in your inbox Tuesday morning with another Grand Strand update!

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
